Elden Ring mega-mod The Convergence redesigns legacy dungeons, improves tutorials and gives its new bosses their own theme music
Elden Ring is set to become a timeless video game, as it offers an extensive experience even during your initial playthrough, with the massive Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion being larger than most primary Dark Souls games. Yet, what truly sets it apart is its vibrant modding community, and none showcase this better than The Convergence. In fact, it’s one of the largest mods for the game to date, and it recently released a significant update since the expansion was launched.
For those who are just starting with this modification: Prepare yourself for an entirely fresh experience as you dive into a complete overhaul of the game. From the ground up, you’ll notice numerous alterations such as various unique character classes, multiple rideable mounts, the challenging boss re-encounter system, and a plethora of new weapons, including adaptive Trick Weapons reminiscent of Bloodborne.
In a simpler phrase, “Convergence seems like a standalone version of the upcoming cooperative spinoff Nightreign. Both involve choosing a character class and adhering to that role, but Convergence offers this experience in a more free-roaming, self-centered sandbox fashion.
Each class begins at a unique starting location, including some that start in Caelid, and follows its own designed path of progression filled with fresh loot, gear sets, spells, and abilities tailored to their specific gameplay mechanics. Even well-known areas have undergone significant changes, as evidenced by the (somewhat dated) trailer linked below.
As a seasoned gamer, I’m thrilled to hop back into the game with the long-awaited update v2.2! Here are some highlights from the patch notes:
Three massive dungeons from the game’s later stages – Mohgwyn Palace, Miquella’s Haligtree, and Crumbling Farum Azula – have undergone a complete overhaul. This means fresh paths, exciting encounters, new bosses, and tantalizing loot await me in these revamped areas!
Additionally, there are four brand-new bosses to conquer, and eight existing ones have been given a facelift. A new tutorial has also been added, teaching the ins and outs of this update’s many new mechanics and concepts. Can’t wait to dive in!
What stands out to me is that each major boss fight in the mod now features unique music, as well as a new main menu theme. Prepare to listen to these fresh tunes when you go up against the extensively revamped villains. Many of them can be seen in their original forms (before the update and soundtrack) in this video showcase here, with my personal favorite being the Scion of the Sealed God.
Observers with a keen eye might discern from that video that numerous Convergence’s bosses are smart combinations of previous projects. Although many sport entirely fresh art and gameplay elements, their movements and behaviors are frequently constructed by combining pieces taken from various games developed by FromSoft, ranging from Dark Souls to Sekiro, and even Bloodborne. For those who are well-versed in recognizing such patterns, it’s straightforward to identify the source of these combinations. However, for individuals who began with Elden Ring, they will primarily encounter unique and fresh experiences.
Installing and running The Convergence surprisingly doesn’t require much effort, even though it seems ambitious. You merely need Elden Ring (with the Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion) already installed on Steam. Obtain the mod’s downloader from its Nexus page, then choose a location other than your Elden Ring game directory for installation. This step is crucial.
After completion, simply execute ‘Start_Convergence.bat‘ in the location where you’ve installed it. This will initiate the modified game, automatically disabling online multiplayer to avoid any potential bans from the main game, and also creating a distinct Convergence save file. This way, it won’t interfere with your usual characters or progress. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
Next, you’ll face a challenging decision: Choosing among the 27 character classes to play. Unfortunately, I can’t provide guidance on that choice.
1. Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Pursue the Witch
2. Elden Ring Blaidd Quest: Keep an Eye on the Wolf Man
3. Elden Ring Nepheli Quest: Track the Warrior Woman
4. Elden Ring Fia Quest: Seek Cold Comfort
5. Elden Ring Volcano Manor Quest: Uncover Mt. Gelmir’s Mystery (or “Investigate Mt. Gelmir”)
