The latest addition to Taylor Sheridan’s popular Western universe stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Many are calling this new series a continuation of the main show’s story, delivering what fans have been eagerly awaiting – essentially a sixth season in all but name.
Cole Hauser explained that the show explores what it’s like to be a cowboy in a new setting. He points out that cowboy life isn’t the same everywhere, and a big part of the story revolves around the simple challenge of providing water for the cattle – and figuring out how they’ll adapt and what they’ll go through. He says they had a lot of questions to answer at the start of the project.
Kelly Reilly explained that they decided to take these three characters and place them in a totally new setting. She felt that on ‘Yellowstone,’ they were like royalty, but now, in this new story, they’re essentially unknown to everyone except the viewers. The other characters have no idea who they are.
Hauser explained that the couple will likely struggle with the move to South Texas because a fire destroyed their Montana ranch. Fortunately, Chad Feehan, the show’s creator and former showrunner, helped them navigate this transition. Hauser said, “We were able to meet with Chad and the writers to get their insights and understand the direction the show is heading.”
Sources say that key figures including Reilly, Hauser, Sheridan, and 101 Studios’ David Glasser were dissatisfied with how Feehan managed the first season’s production.
Beth and Rip to Meet New Friends and Foes in Dutton Ranch
Beth and Rip on Yellowstone have racked up quite a list of enemies over the years. Trying to outsmart the Duttons and those loyal to them – like Dan Jenkins, played by Danny Huston – has consistently proven to be a bad idea.
Beth and Rip could find themselves outmaneuvered if they don’t soon understand who they’re up against in Texas. Along with their son, Carter, they’re new to the area and don’t know anyone. However, like in many small towns, people quickly get to know each other. Joining forces with Reilly and Hauser is Annette Bening, an Academy Award nominee, playing Beulah Jackson, a prominent figure in the Texas beef world. She and her son, Rob-Will, present a significant challenge.
The Duttons are finding some allies as they settle into their new life, including Everett McKinney, a local vet played by Ed Harris, an Academy Award nominee. J.R. Villarreal and Marc Menchaca are also joining the team to help rebuild the ranch. Despite this support, Beth and Rip face significant risks with their move to Texas. As creator David Hauser explains, the challenges aren’t about their relationship, but about whether they can survive this major life change and the gamble of starting over in a new state.
You can start watching Dutton Ranch on Paramount+ with the first two episodes on Friday, May 15th. It will also be shown on the Paramount Network starting at 8 PM Eastern Time that same day.
