Don’t miss the first trailer for Jacob Elordi’s “riveting” sci-fi thriller

The first trailer is out for The Dog Stars, a new sci-fi thriller with Jacob Elordi. The movie, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, is a thrilling story about surviving in a dangerous world and choosing to remain human.

The movie follows Hig (Elordi), a young pilot, and Bangley (Josh Brolin), a military survival expert. They’ve built a self-sufficient, but remote, life for themselves in a harsh world after a major disaster.

Now adjusting to his changed life, Hig discovers a strange radio signal that motivates him to seek out a glimmer of hope and connection in a world that feels lost.

The trailer begins with a heartwarming flashback: Hig bringing home his new dog, Jasper, to his wife, who is expecting their child. They happily greet Jasper, making him part of the family. But the cheerful mood quickly shifts as the music turns unsettling.

Another survivor and medic named Cima (Margaret Qualley) asks Hig what his life was like before everything fell apart. Hig replies that he was simply enjoying time with his family, feeling grateful for how fortunate he was.

So, the game opens with me and Jasper wandering around what’s left of Earth. It’s totally wrecked after some huge pandemic, and honestly, it feels completely empty – like all of humanity is gone. Bangley tells us straight away that it’s all about survival now, just staying alive and fighting off whatever dangers are out there.

Even after Bangley cautioned him, Hig hasn’t given up on finding a better life. He takes to the skies in his aeroplane, searching for other people to join him and build a new community despite the surrounding turmoil.

Ridley Scott directs and produces the film The Dog Stars, with Michael Pruss, Cliff Roberts, and Mark L. Smith also producing. The movie stars Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney.

I was reading an interview with the director in Esquire, and he said he’s really happy with how hopeful his new movie is. He actually said he thinks we’ve had way too many movies about the end of the world lately, and he wanted to do something different!

I began my career with a challenging project – the film Blade Runner – which was incredibly dark and bleak. With my current work, I’m really happy we were able to create a much more hopeful feeling. It suggests that if you make good choices and take action, good things will happen – essentially, ‘you create your own luck’.

The Dog Stars will be released in cinemas on 28 August.
