I’m so excited for The Devil Wears Prada 2! It’s amazing to see Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, back at Runway as a successful journalist, helping them deal with some tough issues and the way the media is changing. There’s a really fun scene early on where Andy, Miranda, and Nigel – Stanley Tucci is brilliant as always – visit Emily Charlton, who’s now running things at Dior in the US. Apparently, that’s where they originally planned for Blake Lively to make a cameo! She was going to play herself, just getting fitted at Dior, which would have been hilarious.
You can get a first look at the movie’s setting – without seeing Sweeney himself – in the official trailer below.
Sydney Sweeney is currently very popular, so removing her cameo appearance seems risky, especially since it would likely generate a lot of attention. She’s fresh off a successful film, The Housemaid, and is returning for what’s likely the last season of HBO’s Euphoria. This feels like the perfect time to leverage her popularity.
Recently, Sydney Sweeney faced criticism for an American Eagle jeans ad campaign. The phrase “great jeans” was seen by some as a reference to eugenics. Sweeney was surprised by the backlash, explaining she simply liked the jeans and the brand. She stated she doesn’t support the problematic views people connected to the ad and that many of the accusations made against her were inaccurate.
According to a source at Entertainment Weekly, the decision to remove Mark Hamill’s cameo as Sweeney wasn’t about anything other than the story. The scene apparently didn’t fit well with the overall flow of the movie and was ultimately cut.
Even though Kevin Sweeney won’t be in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the movie will still feature a star-studded cast. Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway are returning, and they’ll be joined by new actors like Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, B.J. Novak, Caleb Hearon, Rachel Bloom, and Kenneth Branagh.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens in theaters on May 1.
