Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 7
While season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again has been great, it felt like something essential to a true Daredevil series was missing. Thankfully, the second-to-last episode finally delivered that missing piece, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Matt Murdock has always lived a double life, both in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s known as the street-fighting vigilante Daredevil, with his iconic mask and clubs, but he’s also a highly skilled lawyer. However, his legal career wasn’t a major focus in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
It’s understandable why Matt Murdock took a break from practicing law in season two of Born Again, given everything that’s happening. With Mayor Fisk actively targeting vigilantes, Daredevil quickly became a prime target and one of New York’s most wanted criminals.
Episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 sees Matt Murdock return to the courtroom, which is where he’s most effective when he’s not fighting crime as Daredevil. This legal battle will be just as important in bringing down Mayor Fisk as Daredevil’s street-level work.
After 6 Episodes, Matt Murdock Finally Returns To A Courtroom In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
As a huge fan, I have to say seeing Matt Murdock back in the courtroom after six episodes was exactly what I was hoping for. Honestly, it was incredibly satisfying! The whole season built up the mystery of his disappearance, so when he just walks in and drops the line, “Matt Murdock for the defense, your honor,” it gave me chills. What a moment!
Finally, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 feels complete ahead of its upcoming finale.
I’m really worried about Karen. After being arrested by Fisk’s task force, her trial is happening without a jury, but it’s being broadcast all over TV. It’s clear Fisk is doing this to make an example of her, trying to win back public trust after the recent protests. He wants to portray her as a dangerous vigilante, completely destroy her reputation, and then lock her up for good. It’s just awful to watch, knowing he’s deliberately trying to ruin her life.
Knowing Matt Murdock and Daredevil are the same person, it’s surprising Kingpin didn’t immediately deploy his advanced tech to monitor Murdock the moment he entered the courtroom. The reason? Kingpin’s own past choices. He deliberately kept Murdock’s identity as Daredevil a secret, not wanting the man who once saved his life – as shown in the first season of Born Again – to be seen as a hero or martyr.
Meanwhile, Mayor Fisk had publicly expressed gratitude to Matt Murdock for saving his life during season 2 of Born Again, urging the city to help find the missing lawyer and “bring this hero home.” At the same time, the AVTF continued their high-priority search for Daredevil, making it incredibly difficult for him to remain hidden, even when not in costume.
Matt is skillfully using Fisk’s public image against him in court, knowing Fisk is hesitant to retaliate directly for fear of losing more public support to the rising resistance. Even though Murdock is attacked by the AVTF after leaving court on the first day of Karen’s trial, as long as Matt remains inside the courtroom, he can continue to challenge Mayor Fisk with the entire city watching.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s Finale Will Start In Court…Before The Final Battle Begins
Even though he’s been hurt, it’s highly probable that Matt Murdock will be back in court before the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 to finish Karen’s trial, just before things get completely chaotic. The trailers show that Daredevil and his team – including Jessica Jones – will ultimately confront Mayor Fisk, and they’ll have significant support from a large group of New York City residents.
The current season of Daredevil is building towards a thrilling showdown, but first, Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson will have their chance in court to expose Wilson Fisk’s corruption publicly. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic ending to this season, giving both sides of Daredevil – Matt Murdock the lawyer and Daredevil the hero – ample opportunity to prove themselves. Hopefully, the season finale will deliver a satisfying conclusion and set the stage for the already-announced third season, Daredevil: Born Again.
The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again begins streaming May 5th on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
