Oh, honey, grab your popcorn! US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is basically doing a desk pound and yelling, “Senate, get your act together!” over the CLARITY Act. He wants it on President Trump’s desk faster than I want a glass of wine after a day of dealing with Liz Lemon’s shenanigans.
In what might be the most dramatic op-ed since my last “Why I’m Right and You’re Wrong” piece, Bessent is full-on mom-voice demanding action on this crypto market structure bill. Like, seriously, Congress, he’s not asking-he’s mom-asking.
Why Bessent Is Suddenly Channeling His Inner Boss Lady
The CLARITY Act sailed through the House in July 2025 with a bipartisan 294-134 vote. But the Senate? Oh, they’re over there arguing about stablecoin yield provisions like it’s the last slice of pizza at a party. Meanwhile, the bill is just sitting there, collecting digital dust.
Bessent’s like, “Guys, this is basically the sequel to the GENIUS Act, which Trump already signed. Without it, our stablecoin framework is like a party without the booze-just awkward and incomplete.”
He’s also pointing out that without the CLARITY Act, the crypto world is basically the Wild West, but with more blockchain and fewer cowboy hats. Tokenized assets and decentralized exchanges are just sitting there, waiting for Congress to stop bickering and start legislating.
“Congress has spent more time on this than I’ve spent trying to convince Tracy Jordan to eat a vegetable. It’s time for the Senate Banking Committee to hold a markup and send this thing to Trump’s desk before he starts tweeting about it,” Bessent basically said, but with more Treasury Secretary flair.
He also dropped some stats: the global digital asset market is bouncing between $2 trillion and $3 trillion, and nearly 1 in 6 Americans is holding some form of digital asset. Like, if that’s not a sign to get moving, I don’t know what is.
Senate’s Got a Tighter Deadline Than a Spanx Bodysuit
The 2026 midterms are looming like a bad Tinder date, and everyone knows that could flip Congress faster than I can say “That’s a dealbreaker.” So, yeah, the pressure’s on.
Senator Cynthia Lummis hinted in March that a Banking Committee hearing might happen in late April. And apparently, Senators Thom Tillis and Angela Alsobrooks finally agreed on the stablecoin yield provision, which was like the last piece of a puzzle that’s been sitting on the table for months.
But, surprise! There are still issues around decentralized finance protections and illicit finance provisions. Because, of course, nothing in politics is ever easy. It’s like trying to organize a group text with more than three people-chaos.
Bessent’s warning? Regulatory uncertainty is pushing crypto development to places like Abu Dhabi and Singapore, where the rules are clearer. He’s basically saying, “If we don’t act, we’re going to be the friend who shows up late to the party and misses all the good snacks.”
The CLARITY Act, he argues, would set up registration pathways for trading platforms, define when a digital asset is a security, and beef up anti-money-laundering oversight. You know, all the fun stuff that keeps the financial world from turning into the Wild West.
So, will the Senate Banking Committee get their act together before the midterms suck up all the legislative oxygen? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: Bessent’s not holding back on the mom-voice. Congress, you’ve been warned.
