Comedian Diane Morgan to reunite with Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker for returning BBC satire

Diane Morgan and Charlie Brooker are teaming up again for a new series featuring Philomena Cunk, this time called Cunk on Cinema. Building on the success of Cunk on Britain and Cunk on Earth, the show will playfully explore our fascination with movies.

I’m so excited! They’ve started filming the new mockumentary with Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk! It’s written by Charlie Brooker, the genius behind Black Mirror, and it’s going to be three episodes long. We don’t know when it’ll be out yet, but I’m already counting down the days!

The show is set to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two in the UK, and on Netflix outside of the UK.

In Cunk on Cinema, Philomena (Diane Morgan) playfully grills experts on everything cinema, starting with the very beginning – the invention of the camera – and covering major movements like the French New Wave, the rise of CGI, and even what artificial intelligence might mean for movies in the future.

Philomena Cunk tries to unravel the history of cinema – from its origins to its purpose – while experiencing the less glamorous side of moviegoing, questioning why movies exist and why they remain so enigmatic.

Before the show came out, Diane Morgan, playing her character Cunk, jokingly said that cinema’s most powerful and unforgettable scenes perfectly capture what it means to be human. She cited the shower scene in Psycho, Death playing chess in The Seventh Seal, and Tom Selleck’s mustache in Three Men and a Little Lady as examples – and admitted those were the only ones she could think of at the time.

We’ll have a small amount of black and white footage, but we’re working to keep it to a minimum.

With the rise of AI like Sora potentially disrupting the film industry, Charlie Brooker joked that it’s a good moment to reflect on the history of cinema. He’ll be doing so with Philomena Cunk, whom he playfully describes as someone they’re stuck with despite her silliness.

Jon Petrie, the BBC’s head of comedy, announced the return of Philomena Cunk. He said that as a bold and curious documentary maker, she’s the perfect person to explore the world of movies.

Brooker and Morgan will join Ward as executive producers on the show, with Al Campbell directing.
