Christina Applegate ‘might not have a tomorrow’: Friends reveal ‘hellish’ details of star’s hospitalization amid MS battle… why they’re crying at her bedside… and ‘rough’ reality of her decline

There was a time in the mid 2000s when Christina Applegate had the world at her feet.

She became a well-known actress thanks to her starring role on the popular TV show Married… With Children, and she even won an Emmy for playing a guest role as Rachel’s sister on Friends.

Beyond her on-screen success, she enjoyed a glamorous personal life. She’d dated Brad Pitt and become friends with Johnny Depp. As one of the original members of The Pussycat Dolls, alongside stars like Christina Aguilera and Carmen Electra, and a Tony Award nominee for her role in the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity, she truly had a life many would envy.

Things look very different now. The 54-year-old actress has been hospitalized since late March, continuing her ongoing five-year struggle with multiple sclerosis (MS).

This has been incredibly painful for her friends, and it’s a harsh new reality they’re all having to face, including her.

According to a source familiar with the situation, there’s growing concern that each new challenge brings them closer to losing the person they care for. They’re realistically worried about what the future holds.

Christina is a strong person, but living with multiple sclerosis has been incredibly difficult. She experiences good days and very bad days, but rarely feels truly well. She’s constantly facing new challenges, and it’s just awful.

Honestly, when she does focus on the good stuff, it just makes my heart soar! It’s because she’s surrounded by the most amazing friends – they’re always there, you know? To listen, to be a shoulder to cry on, to just be there for her, no matter what. It’s everything!

Appelgate’s health has sadly deteriorated significantly. In 2024, she described being mostly confined to bed as ‘a living hell’.

‘I don’t enjoy living,’ she told a podcast. ‘I don’t enjoy things anymore.’

One can only imagine what her existence is like now.

‘She’s in rough shape,’ our source admitted. ‘But people aren’t thinking that this is the end.

No one wants to think about her funeral. While her illness is progressing faster than we’d hoped, everyone believes in her doctors and her determination to fight.

That situation has definitely been examined before. Earlier this year, Applegate released her memoir, You With The Sad Eyes, detailing her experiences as a child star – she joined the Screen Actors Guild at just five years old – and what appeared to be a perfect life. However, the book also revealed many difficult challenges she faced.

When Applegate was just a few months old, her parents split up, and her mother began struggling with heroin addiction. This was made worse by a string of relationships with abusive partners.

As a child of five, Applegate was sexually abused by a female babysitter, who forced her to perform a sexual act.

By the time she was in middle school, Applegate was the primary source of income for her family. Later, as a young adult, she endured five years in an abusive relationship.

Despite facing personal struggles, she achieved great success, most notably as Kelly Bundy on the popular TV show Married… With Children, a character she played for eleven seasons.

Angelina Jolie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 at age 36 and had a double mastectomy. Doctors discovered she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, which later led her to undergo the same preventative surgery in 2013.

After undergoing surgery, Applegate shared on The Oprah Winfrey Show that she surprisingly viewed her cancer diagnosis as a positive experience.

Looking back, she confesses in her memoir that the experience was much more difficult than she initially let on, and she now wishes she hadn’t presented such a positive face to the world.

She admitted she’d pretended to be strong, believing she was helping others. But she confessed that was just a facade; inside, she was deeply lonely and grieving a profound loss – something that felt like a permanent and painful absence, and that no external fix could ever heal.

She soldiered on.

Before being diagnosed with cancer in 2004, Christina Applegate appeared alongside Will Ferrell in the beloved comedy Anchorman. Fifteen years later, Ferrell supported her again by producing her hit Netflix series, Dead to Me, which aired from 2019 to 2022.

It should have been a career high.

The darkly funny show, which centers around two women connecting at a grief counseling group, received excellent reviews. Applegate also earned nominations for an Emmy, as well as awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the Critics Choice Association.

But in the midst of her triumph, in 2021, she received the devastating news of her MS diagnosis.

As someone who’s followed this condition closely, it’s a really tough one because it affects the nerves and gets worse over time, and sadly, there’s no way to fix it. It’s so unpredictable – I’ve seen people manage it well and live pretty normal lives, while others go through periods where it gets better, only for it to flare up again. But for some, it’s a constant struggle with pain, and they unfortunately decline quickly. It’s heartbreaking to witness the wide range of experiences.

Applegate said in May 2023 that there was ‘never a good day.’

She told Vanity Fair that everyone has difficult days. When people suggest taking more showers to feel better, she finds it hard because showering is actually scary for her. She worries about falling, slipping, or losing her balance, especially since her shower is made of glass.

It’s easy to take everyday abilities for granted, like walking down stairs or carrying objects. I used to be able to do those things without thinking, but now I can’t.

It’s really awful, but I’m still able to manage some things. I can still drive short distances and get food for my child – I can still help them, but I’m struggling with everything else.

Patricia Arquette’s husband of 13 years, Martyn LeNoble, a punk rocker, has been a source of support for her. They have a 15-year-old daughter named Sadie.

From 2001-7 she was married to actor Johnathon Schaech.

According to sources speaking with the Daily Mail in June 2024, Edie Applegate reportedly believed her partner, LeNoble, would be happier if she wasn’t around. Despite this, LeNoble remained committed to supporting her.

According to a source, LeNoble deeply loves his partner and family and has no intention of leaving them.

Applegate also worried about the impact of her illness on their teenager daughter.

According to a source, she believes Sadie is acting more like a parent to her than the other way around.

I really feel for Christina. She’s handling everything as best as she can, and she’s so aware of how many people look up to her and are rooting for her. It’s just heartbreaking to see her in this situation, especially knowing things are likely to get even more difficult. It’s tough when you’re the one facing this, and you see no easy way out.

Also in that year, Applegate started a podcast called MeSsy, which she co-hosted with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with multiple sclerosis.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler, known for her role as Tony Soprano’s daughter, Meadow, on the popular HBO series The Sopranos, received a multiple sclerosis diagnosis at age 20, while the show was in production.

Sigler hid her condition for 15 years, only revealing it in 2017.

Now 44, she and Applegate have been determined to make other sufferers feel less alone.

As I always say, I’m not one for sugarcoating things, and that’s something I really believe in,” Applegate explained to Rolling Stone in March. “Since starting the podcast, we’ve seen that a lot of listeners appreciate how honest, unconventional, and real we are. That’s essentially what the podcast is all about.

People with multiple sclerosis often feel misunderstood. We simply want others to listen to our experiences and allow us to express our frustrations. Sometimes, we just need to vent.

According to a source, Christina is receiving the support she needs, and both she and her loved ones are hopeful about the future.

A spokesperson for Applegate stated they wouldn’t be sharing any information about her potential hospitalization or medical care.

She’s been very open about her long and challenging health journey, sharing details in both her memoir and on her podcast.
