After NASA’s recent successful lunar mission, Breitling launched the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Artemis II. This release highlights Breitling’s history with space exploration, as the Cosmonaute was the first Swiss watch worn in space back in 1962 during the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. The watch received significant publicity when all four astronauts on the latest mission were seen wearing it with their official NASA equipment – a fantastic, natural marketing moment for the brand.
This watch features a 41mm stainless steel case that’s 13mm thick and 47.09mm from lug to lug, maintaining the classic proportions of the original design. What really sets it apart is its striking blue dial, made from a genuine meteorite. This unique stone, composed of iron and nickel, is etched to reveal a beautiful, natural pattern. Because the pattern is created organically, each dial is one-of-a-kind. This is only the second time the brand has used meteorite in its watches, following a special edition released last year. The deep blue dial is complemented by a black bezel and red accents on the chronograph.
The watch is powered by the Breitling B02, a high-precision movement that’s been officially certified by COSC. This manually-wound mechanism features a sophisticated design with a column wheel and vertical clutch, and it can run for up to 70 hours on a single wind. You can admire the intricate workings through the sapphire crystal caseback, which is finished with rhodium plating and Geneva stripes. Staying true to its history as the first watch in space, this timepiece uses a 24-hour dial. This design was originally requested by astronaut Scott Carpenter in the 1960s to easily tell day from night during his orbit around Earth, and it’s still a useful feature for astronauts today.
This special edition watch features a blue alligator leather strap and a secure stainless steel clasp. The steel caseback is engraved with details specific to the mission, including the mission logo and a unique serial number. With only 450 units produced, the watch celebrates the brand’s long history with aviation and space travel. It commemorates the Artemis II mission and is available now at brand stores and authorized retailers for $11,900.
