‘Bloodborne’ Is Getting an R-Rated Movie Adaptation

Last year, it was announced that a movie adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring, created by FromSoftware, was in the works with A24. Now, according to Variety, another FromSoftware game, the dark and atmospheric adventure Bloodborne, is also getting a movie adaptation – this time from Sony Pictures. However, unlike the Elden Ring movie, the Bloodborne adaptation will be animated.

In the game Bloodborne, players become Hunters navigating the eerie, monster-filled city of Yharnam. As they progress, they uncover the city’s dark history, which is tied to powerful, ancient beings known as Great Ones. At a recent event, Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment, assured fans that the upcoming Bloodborne movie will faithfully capture the game’s intense and violent atmosphere.

Similar to many games made by FromSoftware, Bloodborne‘s story is revealed gradually through item details and the game’s environment, making it challenging to adapt into a movie. To help with this, Sony is partnering with popular YouTuber Jacksepticeye (Seán McLoughlin), a well-known Bloodborne fan who regularly streams the game to his audience of over 31 million subscribers.

A ‘Bloodborne’ Movie Was Inevitable, and the Right Choice for Hollywood

Video game movies used to have a terrible reputation. Films like Street Fighter (1996), Bloodrayne (2005), and Far Cry (2008) were often seen as quick attempts to make money with little artistic merit. However, things have dramatically improved. Not only are game adaptations better quality now, but they’re also becoming huge hits. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is predicted to be one of the biggest films of 2026, and successful TV series like Arcane and The Last of Us have also raised the bar. Now, when announcements are made about adapting popular games like Elden Ring and Bloodborne into movies, people are excited rather than skeptical.

It’s also noteworthy that Jacksepticeye is involved, similar to the recent success of the movie Iron Lung. That film was written, directed, and starred Markiplier, a popular YouTuber with over 38 million subscribers, who built his following creating gaming content. While Iron Lung was an independent project, the Bloodborne movie has the backing of Sony Pictures. However, both films demonstrate how influential creators like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye are becoming in the entertainment world.

I’m still eagerly waiting for news about the Bloodborne movie – there’s no release date or cast information yet! But it’s not all bad news, because a lot of exciting video game adaptations are on the horizon. I’m really looking forward to the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, which Sony is releasing in theaters on May 7, 2027. Plus, Prime Video just gave us a first glimpse of their God of War series, and HBO is developing a show to continue the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s a great time to be a fan!
