Blake Lively states in recent legal documents that a public relations battle with Justin Baldoni’s production company damaged her reputation and resulted in approximately $40 million in losses.
As a dedicated follower of Colleen Hoover’s work, I was shocked to learn the extent of Blake Lively’s lawsuit. Apparently, court documents show she’s seeking between $142 million and nearly $300 million from Justin Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios and the production company behind the ‘It Ends With Us’ movie. It’s a huge amount, and I’m really following this legal battle closely to see how it all unfolds.
The actress, age 38, recently stated in a legal document that being labeled a ‘mean girl’ and other negative descriptions during a disagreement with Baldoni’s production company damaged her reputation, costing her an estimated $36.5 to $40.5 million.
Lively’s lawsuit also states that she was labeled with hurtful terms like ‘mean girl,’ ‘bully,’ and ‘tone deaf’ online, which caused significant damage to her reputation, costing her millions of dollars.
Just checking in with the teams behind Baldoni, Wayfarer, and Lively to get their thoughts on things. We reached out for comment and are awaiting their response.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following this case closely. It’s interesting to see Lively trying to quantify the harm to her reputation, essentially putting a price on the damage. This comes after she fought against Wayfarer’s intention to present articles to the jury that painted her in a negative light – specifically, as someone who was unkind and a bully. She clearly wants to control the narrative and limit how damaging those portrayals could be.
Despite the judge dismissing most of her claims – including accusations of sexual harassment against Baldoni, which he strongly denies – she is still pursuing her legal case.
Despite some claims being dismissed, the court allowed parts of the lawsuit to proceed. Specifically, the plaintiff’s allegations that Wayfarer and IEWUM retaliated against her, helped others retaliate, and that IEWUM broke their contract, were all still valid. These surviving claims involved actions taken against the PR firm, The Agency Group.
In a recent court document, Lively detailed the financial impact of the alleged damage to her reputation, providing specific figures for each claim.
She is seeking around $24.4 million in damages. This calculation is based on an estimated 117 million views of the harmful statements, and will be supported by expert evidence.
Court records indicate the campaign caused an estimated $36.5 to $40.5 million in damages. This figure is based on over 176 million times the terms “bully,” “mean girl,” and “tone deaf” were seen online as a result of the campaign, and will be supported by expert analysis.
Her alleged damages for reputational harm are on top of economic damages.
Lively claims she lost between roughly $41.6 million and $87.8 million in earnings, and between $39.6 million and $143.5 million in profits, and has expert witnesses to support these claims.
The Gossip Girl star gives a breakdown of her alleged lost earnings.
She states that Blake Lively potentially lost between $47.5 million and $90 million in acting and producing roles in major movies through August 2029.
She estimates she lost between $2.5 million and $22.5 million in potential acting and producing roles, including smaller films and brief appearances. She also claims lost income of $8 million to $20 million from limited-run television series.
She’s expected to lose between $9.5 and $26 million due to lost endorsements and canceled speaking engagements and appearances.
Lively argues that the alleged public relations efforts caused significant financial harm to her business.
She claims her company, Blake Brown Beauty, experienced a cash flow loss of between $19.4 million and $45.1 million, and she also lost between $12.3 million and $70.2 million in expected royalties from the brand.
Lively also alleges that Betty B Holdings, LLC, lost around $7.9 million to $28.3 million.
She is also requesting between $250,000 and $400,000 to cover the emotional and physical distress, as well as the humiliation, she says resulted from Wayfarer’s alleged actions against her.
Wayfarer’s lawyers disputed the numbers presented by Lively, according to a document filed with the court and reviewed by the Daily Mail.
Instead of agreeing that Baldoni’s studio harmed Lively’s reputation, they argue that she was the cause of any damage to it herself.
According to Wayfarer’s lawyers, Lively’s behavior during filming had already severely damaged her reputation at Sony Pictures. They claim she repeatedly tried to control the movie, excluded Baldoni from the premiere, and wouldn’t help promote it unless her conditions were satisfied.
The plaintiffs point to critical comments about Lively from Sony Pictures executives as proof, and argue that news articles calling her a ‘mean girl’ – all published between 2014 and 2020 – should be allowed as evidence.
Wayfarer’s lawyers argue that Lively was already known for being unkind and bullying others, so any negative public perception wasn’t caused by their marketing efforts.
Lively’s lawsuit is set to go to court on May 18 in New York.
