Bitcoin’s Road to 2140: What Happens When Last BTC Is Mined?

<a href="https://pricpr.com/btc-usd/">Bitcoin</a>‘s Road to 2140: What Happens When Last <a href="https://bbg-news.com/btc-usd/">BTC</a> Is Mined?

Currently, around 20.05 million Bitcoins are in circulation, which makes up 95.47% of the total 21 million that will ever be created. This means only about 950,000 Bitcoins are left to be mined in the future, according to CoinMarketCap data.

Bitcoin is designed so that the very last one will likely be created around the year 2140. This estimate comes from its programmed schedule where the reward for mining new blocks gets cut in half about every four years. As this reward shrinks over time, it’s expected to take a long time – possibly decades – to issue the final, tiny pieces of Bitcoin.

As a crypto investor, I know that right now, about 3.125 new Bitcoins are created every 10 minutes. But this isn’t fixed – the rate of new Bitcoin entering the market will actually slow down around 2028 with the next ‘halving’ event. Basically, it’ll become harder to ‘mine’ new coins after that.

What happens after the final Bitcoin is mined

I was reading up on what might happen once all Bitcoin is mined, and Binance had an interesting take. Apparently, even after that happens, the remaining 950,000 or so Bitcoin won’t just appear all at once. Because of the way Bitcoin is designed with its ‘halving’ schedule, those coins will be released slowly, over the next 100+ years. It’s a really long timeline, and something to keep in mind as an investor.

Bitcoin has a built-in limit on the total number of coins that will ever exist. This limit, and the process called ‘halving’ which controls how new coins are released, are key parts of Bitcoin’s design. This article explains why this supply cap is important and what happens when no more new Bitcoins are created – projected to be around the year 2140.

Around the year 2140, all Bitcoins will have been mined. At that point, the people who verify Bitcoin transactions (miners) will only be able to earn money from the fees users pay, rather than from newly created Bitcoins. Currently, miners earn income from both new Bitcoins and these transaction fees.

Around the year 2140, the final Bitcoin will be mined, and miners will no longer receive rewards for creating blocks. After that, they’ll need to depend on fees from transactions to cover their expenses and continue earning money.

Next Bitcoin halving anticipated in 2028

The next time the reward for mining Bitcoin will be cut in half is approaching quickly – it’s now less than 100,000 blocks away, according to data from OKLink. Currently, there are approximately 90,995 blocks left until that happens.

According to OKLink, Bitcoin is getting closer to its next halving – an event expected around April 13, 2028. Currently, there are about 631 days remaining until the halving, which will reduce the reward for mining new blocks to 1.5625 BTC.
