One space opera series continues to soar years later as it hits number one on Apple.
When people think of space operas, Star Wars is still the most famous and popular example. Since the original 1977 film by George Lucas, many other stories have explored this type of sci-fi, with its focus on space travel, exciting adventures, memorable characters, and grand stories. And now, one of those stories is becoming popular with audiences again.
I’m really excited to see that Battlestar Galactica is currently the most popular show on the Apple TV store in the US! As of today, it’s beating out a ton of other great series like Landman, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the wonderfully weird Space Ghost Coast to Coast, George & Mandie’s First Marriage, and even Suits. It’s awesome to see a classic sci-fi show still resonating with audiences.
As a big sci-fi fan, I was checking where Battlestar Galactica is ranking on the streaming charts, and it’s interesting! Right now, the U.S. is the only country where it’s actually in the top 10 on Apple TV – it’s at number 14 in Canada, though. Over on Amazon, it’s sitting at number 25.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I absolutely loved Battlestar Galactica. It’s a reimagining of the original 1978 series, created by Ronald D. Moore, and it really pulls you in. The story is set way out in space, and it follows the last survivors of humanity as they’re hunted by these incredibly advanced robots called Cylons. Over four seasons, the show features a fantastic cast – Edward James Olmos, Katee Sackoff, Mary McDonnell, and so many others – who really bring the story to life.
Battlestar Galactica, which originally aired on the Sci-Fi Channel (now SYFY) from 2004 to 2009, was highly praised for its engaging stories, blending exciting science fiction with realistic and complex human characters. Critics loved the show, giving it a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences closely followed with a 94% approval score.
Even though Battlestar Galactica ended in 2007, it’s still considered one of the best science fiction shows ever made for television, with The Expanse being a recent contender for the same title. The show is so popular that a continuation or remake was being developed by Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, for Peacock. However, Peacock decided not to proceed with the project in 2024, and it’s expected to be offered to other networks or streaming services.
It’s still uncertain if the planned new version of Battlestar Galactica will actually be made. However, the show is currently doing well on Apple TV, and its continued popularity could increase the chances of another project happening in that same world.
