Bangers & Cash: From Fred Astaire to bootlegging, the racy life of a 100-year-old Roller
As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience under my belt, I find myself constantly inspired by stories like that of Adele Astaire and her extraordinary journey. Her audacity, wit, and unparalleled talent were not only captivating but also set the tone for a generation of trailblazers.
In the 1920s, when Fred Astaire and his elder sibling Adele debuted on the London stage, a critic exclaimed, “Since Noah’s Flood, there hasn’t been anyone quite like them.”
However, it wasn’t the graceful dance moves of young Fred that captivated the crowd at the West End. Instead, it was Adele, the one who embodied the essence of flappers, who dazzled them with her dance moves reminiscent of a dancing lilac flame.
On nights of the Boat Race, her impromptu remarks were notoriously bold, and this boldness was equally well-known. One such evening, when an arrogant gentleman in the first row hurled a piece of chocolate at her, she confidently strode to the spotlight and tossed it right back, hitting him squarely on his chest.
As a fervent royal enthusiast, I found myself graced with an invitation to St. James’s Palace – a dream come true! Dancing with the Prince of Wales was a delight, yet it was none other than Bertie, our future George VI, whose charm captured my attention.
She wrote home, saying, ‘He’s an unaware, young man, quite vulnerable. It wouldn’t be difficult for me to manipulate him, if you know what I mean.’

Achieving such remarkable triumphs certainly comes with its perks. For instance, in 1926, Fred indulged himself by purchasing his inaugural Rolls-Royce, equipped with an impressive 20 horsepower and capable of reaching almost 60 miles per hour.
Overwhelmed by his affection for the vehicle, he returned it to Hollywood. Once there, he commissioned custom ‘Playboy Roadster’ bodywork to emulate the appearance of an American millionaire. Eventually, this refurbished car found its way into the possession of a rum runner during the Prohibition era who used it as a disguise for illicit alcohol transportation.
A hundred years had passed, and the Roller made its reappearance at an auction held in the Yorkshire village of Thornton-le-Dale, as Bangers & Cash came back to town again.
Surprisingly, it didn’t even reach its £50,000 minimum bid, despite the tireless attempts of auctioneer and TV personality, Derek Mathewson.
More shocking still, half the staff at the showroom had no idea who Fred Astaire was.
In my line of work as a lifestyle aficionado, I can attest to the fact that it’s not just the sleek design or powerful engines that make a car show truly captivating. It’s the tales behind those four wheels that keep us engaged and coming back for more, especially in this series we’re now five seasons deep into.
In this scenario, Brian, aged 85, was offering two vehicles for sale: a Subaru Impreza model and a 1973 E-Type Jaguar with a V12 engine.
Despite the Jag being the clear-cut classic, Brian’s affection lay with the Impreza. He couldn’t help but smile, calling it his “villain.”
‘The type of buzz you can’t buy — you have to drive it. But it’s time to move on. . . well, the thing is, I’m not getting any younger.’

Despite being in his eighties, the elderly car enthusiast has no intentions of giving up driving. With the $15,000 he received from selling the Subaru and the £36,600 (after deducting the auctioneer’s fee) from the E-Type, Brian intends to buy an electric vehicle instead.
Derek’s son Dave was on his way to Northern Ireland with a green Ford Escort and a red face.
In the span of a few days during the 1970s, two cars resembling those from the Mexico model with its distinctive rally car aesthetics, were purchased at Mathewson’s. One was shipped to a customer residing in Wales, while the other found its new owner on the other side of the Irish Sea.
Regrettably, they were dispatched in a reversed order… Such errors tend to have a broader impact, as one might well imagine.
It seems that what you’re referring to is often called Murphy’s Law, even if the person who first expressed this concept wasn’t necessarily named Murphy himself.
