The nations of the world unite to try and save the human race, and the novel then jumps forward in time to show what life is like five thousand years later.
The new science fiction film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian. Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a former scientist and schoolteacher sent on a space mission to save the world. Malcolm in the Middle is a standout TV show from the 2000s that still holds up today. It offered a fresh and unusual take on family life, told through the perspective of the incredibly smart Malcolm, the middle child. The show was a trendsetter, introducing many elements that became common in sitcoms throughout the decade and beyond.

I’ve been following this comedy for a while now. It was first announced back in April of 2023, and filming actually started a couple of months later in June. They finished shooting in mid-April of this year, 2024, but it hasn’t been a smooth ride. The film has gone through a lot of changes since then, and unfortunately, it’s been delayed again. We’re now looking at a release date of January 22nd, 2027.

The movie is energetic, creative, and has a lot of charm, but what really makes it work is the fantastic connection between the two main actors. James Marsden, Eiza González, and Vince Vaughn – especially Vince Vaughn – have great chemistry, delivering plenty of laughs and genuinely touching moments. The plot gets a bit tangled at times, but the director always keeps the film grounded and in control, even when things get wild.
So far this year, Project Hail Mary is receiving a lot of praise, largely due to Ryan Gosling’s excellent performance, the incredibly charming character of Rocky, and a story that simplifies the complex science from the original book, making it both understandable and emotionally engaging.
