Project Hail Mary ending spoilers follow.
So far this year, Project Hail Mary is receiving a lot of praise, largely due to Ryan Gosling’s excellent performance, the incredibly charming character of Rocky, and a story that simplifies the complex science from the original book, making it both understandable and emotionally engaging.
However, elements from Andy Weir’s book were still included in the movie, though often in smaller, less noticeable ways.

I loved that Eva Stratt had a much bigger role in the book! She really stepped up and had to make some incredibly difficult choices, all in an effort to save Earth. It was so compelling to see her trying to secure the planet’s future.
Much of the detail had to be removed to keep the movie at a reasonable length. However, at the director’s suggestion, a quick glimpse of a tattoo on the older Stratt’s neck suggests she attempted to carry out the difficult choices discussed, and ultimately faced consequences for doing so.
What to Read Next
In an interview with Collider, co-director Phil Lord explained that they initially tried to include a storyline about how society fell apart after Grace went to space, but it didn’t quite work in the film.
Authorities arrested Eva and put her on trial, resulting in a prison sentence. As a creative touch suggested by Andy Weir, she also has a tattoo that reads, ‘I’ve been in French prison for life.’

Director Chris Miller further explained the tattoo, describing it as a ‘V’ with a line through it. He said the ‘V’ represents life, and the line signifies ‘without parole’.
Andy believed she’d been sentenced to life in prison, but she escaped using her contacts and went into hiding while continuing her efforts to help the world.
Project Hail Mary is out in cinemas now.
