Aubrey Plaza first became famous for playing April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation. More recently, she appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now she’s achieving chart-topping success with her new adult animated comedy, Kevin.
According to FlixPatrol, the new series Kevin is already the eighth most popular show on Prime Video in the US. This impressive ranking comes just two days after the show premiered on April 20, 2026. Kevin was co-created by and stars Aubrey Plaza, along with Jason Schwartzman, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, and Amy Sedaris.
What Is Kevin About?
The story centers on Kevin, a cat who’s trying to navigate life after his owners get divorced. Played by Jason Schwartzman, this tuxedo cat leaves his comfortable New York City home and quickly discovers that being independent isn’t as simple as he thought.
Kevin is trying to survive on the streets when he unexpectedly finds shelter at an animal rescue. He makes friends with the other animals there, many of whom have had even harder lives than he has. Aubrey Plaza plays Dana, the person who used to own Kevin. The show also includes appearances by guest stars like Quinta Brunson, Patti LuPone, and Tig Notaro.
Kevin Received Mixed Reviews from Critics
Critics had a generally positive, though somewhat mixed, reaction to Kevin. The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports a 63% approval rating based on reviews. In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, Angie Han noted that the show eventually settles into a comfortable, comedic groove similar to shows like Friends, Seinfeld, or Adults, but with a noticeably more outlandish sense of humor.
In a review for Variety, Alison Herman described the animated series Kevin as a delightfully messy and heartwarming coming-of-age story. She compared its humor to Big Mouth, noting its blend of crude and genuine moments. The review also praised Kevin as a short but memorable and enjoyable addition to Prime Video’s animated offerings.
While the show received some positive feedback, not all reviews were glowing. Rebecca Nicholson of the Financial Times noted the impressive cast led some to hope for a show comparable to the acclaimed animated series BoJack Horseman, but ultimately found it less powerful and emotionally resonant, though still enjoyable in parts.
As a sitcom fan, I’ve noticed a pattern: so many of the shows we end up loving really took a while to hit their stride. Think about it – Bob’s Burgers and even Parks and Recreation both got pretty mixed reactions when they first came out. It’s amazing how they eventually built such dedicated fan bases and became total pop culture staples!
Even though opinions on Kevin are varied, the show is still gaining popularity on streaming platforms. While a second season hasn’t been officially announced, the growing audience and the show’s continued success could lead to its renewal. A new season has the potential to build on the strengths of this adult animated series and become truly unmissable.
All 8 episodes of Kevin are available to stream on Prime Video.
