Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is finally announced – here’s what’s been changed

Ubisoft has officially revealed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a complete remake of the popular 2013 game. Black Flag was a major launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though it was also surprisingly available on older PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

The game takes place in the Caribbean and tells the story of Edward Kenway, a Welsh pirate who rises to fame while crossing paths with famous pirates like Blackbeard. He also finds himself caught in the long-running battle between the Assassins and Templars.

The first game was a huge hit with both players and critics. It built on the series’ core gameplay of running, climbing, and quiet takedowns by adding exciting new features like sailing the open sea, singing sea shanties, searching for sunken treasure, avoiding dangerous sea creatures like sharks and whales, solving treasure map puzzles, and battling British and Spanish ships.

Beyond updated graphics with better lighting and detail, the remake’s biggest change is a completely overhauled combat system.

Players found the old combat system clunky and reliant on repeatedly pressing buttons. Now, Resynced aims for a smoother, more dynamic fighting experience, emphasizing well-timed blocks and fast, concise attack combinations.

Parkour is becoming more player-controlled and less reliant on automatic movements. Players will now have more options like back and side escapes, and can manually crouch to improve stealth and create smoother gameplay.

Getting caught while eavesdropping won’t immediately cause you to fail a mission anymore. However, you’ll still need to adjust your strategy depending on how the person you’re watching – Edward – is perceived.

The game is also expanding the story with content centered around Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet – the main characters from the show Our Flag Means Death. Players will also meet three new characters – Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Deadman Smith – each with their own secrets, and can add them to Edward’s crew.

The game features changing weather that affects sailing, plus 10 new songs for your crew to perform. You can even bring a pet – either a cat or a monkey – aboard your ship!

This updated version of a fan-favorite game is Ubisoft’s attempt to revitalize the series following the mixed reception of last year’s Shadows.

Another adaptation will be a live-action series on Netflix, and they revealed many of the actors involved last month.

The show appears to jump between different time periods, with Netflix describing it as a story that follows characters through important moments in history as they fight to determine the future of humankind.

Assassin’s Creed Resynced will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on 9 July.
