A new video game movie has shaken up the box office rankings! It recently surpassed A Minecraft Movie in both North American and global earnings.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned over $425 million in the United States and Canada, exceeding the total domestic earnings of The Minecraft Movie ($424 million). It’s also performing better internationally, with $557 million compared to Minecraft’s $536 million. This makes the Mario movie the second-highest-grossing film ever based on a video game, both in North America and worldwide. A sequel is planned for 2026.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Isn’t No. 1 Just Yet (And It Likely Won’t Be)

Even though The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still showing in cinemas, it may not reach $1 billion in total earnings worldwide. While it’s been a success, it doesn’t appear likely to surpass the earnings of the previous Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023 and become the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $1.36 million in theaters. While the game Galaxy came out only three years later, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the first Mario film in three decades and the first to closely follow the video games, which probably attracted a larger audience to see it in cinemas.

Despite the Super Mario movies potentially becoming less profitable over time, earning $1 billion at the box office is still a huge achievement. That’s why Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal are reportedly planning a third Mario movie, as well as exploring ideas for other spin-off films and shows.

Keegan-Michael Key, the voice of Toad in the animated films, recently hinted that the new movie is taking time because the creators are committed to getting everything perfect. He jokingly apologized for the delay, but assured fans it will be worth it, saying, “’29 is better than no date at all, right?”

Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination are reportedly working on another project together. In 2025, they copyrighted a “Donkey Kong Project,” suggesting they’re developing a new film or show starring the character, who was voiced by Seth Rogen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Minecraft Will Have the Chance to Reclaim the No. 2 Box Office Spot

Jack Black has a lot to celebrate with Galaxy surpassing Minecraft at the box office. He’s involved in both films – he voices Bowser in the Mario movies and plays Steve in Minecraft. This unique accomplishment makes him the only actor to star in the three most successful video game movies ever made.

The rest of the cast of A Minecraft Movie will get another chance to reach the number two spot – and maybe even the top – next year. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are currently working on a sequel, scheduled for release on July 23, 2027.
