He-Man is a huge hit on streaming! Masters of the Universe debuted on Prime Video last week and has quickly become the platform’s most popular movie globally, including in the U.S. and numerous other countries, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Mattel hoped Masters of the Universe would be as successful as Barbie, aiming for a similar level of popularity with a different audience. Despite being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the film didn’t perform well in theaters. However, recent streaming numbers suggest it may be finding an audience online.
Masters of the Universe Is Officially a Streaming Hit on Prime Video
In Masters of the Universe, Prince Adam returns to his homeland, Eternia, after being away for 15 years. Guided by the Sword of Power, he finds his home overtaken by the evil Skeletor. To rescue his family and world, Adam must accept his fate as He-Man—the universe’s strongest man—and team up with his friends Teela and Duncan (Man-At-Arms).
Critics had a mixed response to Masters of the Universe. While Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 67% score – considered ‘fresh’ but not ‘certified fresh’ – most critics enjoyed it as a fun adaptation of the popular toys, calling it a “delightful adventure.” Viewers seem to like it even more, giving the film an 86% positive rating.
The performances of Jacob Elordi, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba worked incredibly well together, making this the exciting action movie we’ve been waiting for – a truly impressive adaptation that does justice to the world of Eternia.
Can Streaming Save the Masters of the Universe Franchise?
Despite generally positive reviews and enthusiastic fan responses, the movie Masters of the Universe didn’t do well in theaters. It earned $113 million globally, but cost $170 million to make – falling far short of expectations. This poor performance could jeopardize director Travis Knight’s hopes for a follow-up film.
I truly love these characters and the rich world they inhabit. There’s a lot more story to tell than what we could fit into this one film – many ideas didn’t make the cut. However, we created the movie we wanted to create, and I’m really proud of it. If we get the chance to continue these stories, I have a clear vision for where they will go and who should be part of them.
