Amazon still committed to 5-season plan for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

As a seasoned gamer and a long-time Tolkien enthusiast, I must admit that my journey through Middle-earth with “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has been an interesting one. Having grown up reading the books and watching the Peter Jackson trilogy, I was initially apprehensive about this new adaptation. Yet, despite the initial hiccups and the vocal minority of haters, I find myself settling into it as a fun action-adventure series.

A fresh piece by The Hollywood Reporter sheds light on challenges confronting popular fantasy series today, specifically House of the Dragon on HBO and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video. Previously, we delved into the tumult surrounding House of the Dragon, but let’s touch on The Rings of Power now.

In simpler terms, the TV show started its second season a month ago, but it appears that fewer people are watching compared to the first season. This is based on data from SambaTV, a third party source. Amazon, aiming to present an optimistic view, stated that 40 million people have watched the show since the second season premiere. However, it’s important to note that what constitutes a “view” for this metric isn’t clearly defined. Also, we don’t know how this compares to the viewership during the same time period in the first season, as Amazon provides only as much information as they choose to share.

It appears that the second season of The Rings of Power might be attracting fewer viewers compared to its first, however, the viewership figures are still quite robust. According to James Hibberd from THR, Amazon has confirmed their dedication to the show’s proposed five-season plan, which should help dispel any speculation about its potential cancellation in the near future.

As a devoted fan, it’s undeniable that “The Rings of Power” has garnered a significant number of critics since its debut. Yet, there’s a passionate community of fans who eagerly embrace this epic tale. Recently, J.D. Payne, one of the showrunners alongside Patrick McKay, extended a gracious message to all viewers:

The Fellowship had to look to each other, and those who support it, and remember what it’s fighting for. And when we see that millions of people are watching this and responding so positively to it — that’s who we’re fighting for. And those who watch every episode and [negatively] write about it on social media and make YouTube videos, we’re happy to have you guys, too. It wouldn’t be a journey through Middle-earth without some trolls along the way.

Prior to starting “The Rings of Power”, I had high expectations that it would evoke the enchanting and majestic world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, leaving me spellbound. Unfortunately, this didn’t occur; however, I find myself appreciating the series more as an engaging action-adventure production. It seems that those with mixed feelings towards the show, like myself, are not explicitly mentioned in Payne’s statement. However, I do hope the series continues for some time to come.
