Aimee Lou Wood playfully responded to a Saturday Night Live sketch that made fun of her teeth, after it was revealed she’ll be hosting the British version of the show.
Okay, so I was livid when I heard about this! Apparently, last year, this actress – she’s amazing, seriously – she actually called out the American version of this comedy show. Why? Because they did this awful skit making fun of her teeth! Can you believe the nerve? I mean, she’s gorgeous, and they just…mocked her teeth! It totally upset me, and I’m so glad she stood up for herself.
Sarah Sherman had worn huge prosthetic teeth in her mouth as she did a cruel impression of Aimee.
It seems Aimee is starting fresh, as she’s agreed to host this week’s episode of the UK version of the show.
In a video promoting her upcoming appearance, Aimee mentioned a past disagreement with the show while meeting and introducing herself to some of the cast members on set.
She expressed her excitement to begin, referencing the dental issues she experienced during her trip to America.
‘It’s gonna feel good to just wipe the slate clean.’
When she saw everyone covering their mouths, the actress from Sex Education guessed they were all wearing dentures.
She playfully complained, ‘Are those fake teeth? Seriously! It feels like this whole thing is a joke designed to embarrass me. I expected SNL UK to be better, but I guess not.’
The promotional clip ended as they revealed they were just hiding fake moustaches.
Following her criticism of a sketch about her teeth last year, Aimee shared that HBO had apologized to her.
In an interview with BBC News last September, Aimee explained she stood by her statement because it was a departure from her usual behavior. She said this pattern of speaking up was something she’d done throughout her life, even when she was bullied.
She remembered thinking when she first saw the drawing: ‘I can either confront this and feel ashamed, simply saying I didn’t appreciate it because it was hurtful, or I can avoid it.’
Sherman, also reached out to Aimee and sent her a bouquet of flowers.
Speaking up for the first time, she explained she was thrilled to take on the role because the character is so well-known. She also emphasized that she absolutely didn’t intend to offend anyone.
I never intended for my comedy to hurt anyone, and I’m really sorry if it did.
When asked if she worries about potentially offending viewers on the show, Sherman simply replied, ‘Absolutely.’
The show stays current by constantly responding to what’s happening in culture, and things move quickly these days. You really need to pay attention to everything, if that makes sense.
Sherman pointed out that many aspects of life are beyond our control, and we often find ourselves fulfilling roles and expectations set by others.
For me, a big part of working on the show has been figuring out how to balance staying aware of everything happening with actually participating in it – that’s essentially what my role is.
‘Being in conversation with everything popular culture, there’s such a danger there.
You know, as someone constantly involved in creating content, it’s easy to lose sight of how things are actually perceived. When your work regularly touches on current events, pop culture, and the broader cultural conversation, you’re always ‘on,’ and it’s tough to step back and see things from an outside perspective. It’s a unique position to be in, constantly engaging with what’s happening in the world around us.
The more involved I become with the show, the more there is for me to figure out.
Earlier this month, Saturday Night Live joked about Kanye West being banned from the UK in a sketch performed by that week’s host, Jack Whitehall.
Ye, the 48-year-old rapper, was denied a visa by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
She prohibited him from performing at the Wireless Festival in Britain in July, stating his presence would be harmful to the public interest.
The video shows Jack looking at a bulletin board used to schedule the hosts and musical performers for each week’s show.
The comedian, age 37, noticed Ye listed as both a presenter and performer on the display board. He immediately removed both of Ye’s cards from the board.
