ABC’s Desperate Housewives Is a Digital Streaming Hit Ahead of Spin-Off

The 2004-2005 TV season saw the arrival of popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Desperate Housewives. Now, 14 years after it originally ended, Desperate Housewives is finding a new audience thanks to streaming.

According to FlixPatrol, Desperate Housewives is currently the sixth most popular show on Apple TV in the US. The series is also performing well in France and Hungary, demonstrating its continued appeal more than 20 years after it first aired. It’s therefore not surprising that a new spin-off is being developed.

Desperate Housewives Was One of the Biggest Shows of the 2000s

The main characters of Desperate Housewives were played by Teri Hatcher as Susan Mayer, Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo, Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp, and Eva Longoria as Gabrielle Solis. The show also included a supporting cast with actors like Nicollette Sheridan as Edie Britt, Steven Culp as Rex Van de Kamp, Ricardo Chavira as Carlos Solis, and Brenda Strong as Mary Alice Young, among others.

Desperate Housewives was a popular mystery-comedy-drama series that centered on the lives of several women and the aftermath of a suicide in the very first episode. Combining mystery, family issues, and dark humor, the show quickly became a success, earning numerous awards and solidifying its place as a standout series for ABC.

The popular series Desperate Housewives found success internationally, with adaptations airing in several South American countries like Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil. It also expanded to new audiences with versions premiering in Turkey and Nigeria. Beyond the television show, Desperate Housewives became a broader franchise, including a video game, a board game, and two official novels.

Desperate Housewives Is Now Getting a Spin-Off

As a huge fan of Desperate Housewives, I wasn’t surprised when I heard they were working on a spin-off – it was such a massive hit worldwide and for ABC! They officially announced it was happening in April 2025, which is so exciting. We haven’t heard who’s going to be in it yet, but everyone’s already buzzing with guesses about the cast.

The upcoming series, Wisteria Lane, will follow a fresh set of women residing on the iconic street. It won’t include any actors from the original show. The series is being produced by Kerry Washington’s production company, Simpson Street, leading many to speculate that Washington might also appear as a cast member.

Natalie Chaidez, known for her work on shows like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and The Flight Attendant, is writing a new series set in the world of Desperate Housewives. While the project is still in its early stages and details are limited, the original show’s enduring success suggests a strong audience interest in revisiting Wisteria Lane.
