What Ho, Financial Fandango!
- AAVE, that sprightly token, took a header, plummeting 20% to a mere $89, all thanks to the shenanigans at Kelp DAO.
- Those scoundrels exploited a vulnerability in the LayerZero bridge, making off with 116,500 rsETH, and then had the audacity to deposit it on Aave V3, borrowing $196M in WETH. Dash it all, what a to-do!
- Aave, not one to take such tomfoolery lying down, promptly restricted trading of rsETH and its borrowings to stem the tide of chaos.
Well, I say, old bean, AAVE, the darling of the Aave protocol, has had a bit of a rough patch, what? All on account of that Kelp DAO exploit, a whopping $292 million affair. It’s left the lending markets in a bit of a flutter, like a startled partridge in the grouse season.
On April 19, the token was strutting about at $112, but by Jove, it took a nosedive to $89.08, a 22% drop in a single day. That’s enough to make a chap spill his morning cuppa. And just when it was looking as dapper as a debutante at a ball, trading at $118 before the hack. Now, it’s all sixes and sevens, with massive withdrawals and a liquidity crunch that’s more awkward than a vicar at a vaudeville show.
At the time of scribbling this down, AAVE is still on the slide, losing 3.14% in the past 24 hours, and it’s down 4.88% on the weekly charts, trading at $90.12. CoinMarketCap says so, and they’re usually spot on, what?
The Dastardly Deed
The whole kerfuffle kicked off on April 18, when those blighters exploited a vulnerability in Kelp DAO’s LayerZero bridge. They hoodwinked the cross-chain messaging layer into thinking a valid instruction had come from another network, and off they went with 116,500 rsETH. That’s a cool $292 million, with about 18% of its circulating supply having no corresponding backing. Then, the bounders deposited the tokens on Aave V3, borrowing $196 million in WETH, leaving the protocol holding the baby-or rather, the bad debt.
Within hours, Stani Kulechov, the chap behind Aave, announced that rsETH markets on both Aave V3 and V4 had been frozen. “Aave’s contracts have not been exploited,” he assured, “this is an exploit related to rsETH.” He also confirmed that the asset now holds zero borrowing power, with no further exposure. Phew, that’s a relief, what?
rsETH has been frozen on Aave V3 and V4, the asset does not have any borrowing power as a measure due to KelpDAO bridge exploit that happened outside of Aave. Both Aave V3 and V4 does not have further exposure to rsETH.

The protocol is now having a good old think about post-exploit borrows and how to offset any deficit via its safety module. Jolly good show, that.
The TVL Tumble
Aave’s total value locked (TVL) has taken a bit of a pasting, slipping from $26.4 billion on April 18 to $17.3 billion today, according to DefiLlama. The wider DeFi ecosystem has lost over $13.82 billion in TVL in the past 48 hours. Dash it, that’s enough to make a chap’s head spin.
CoinMarketCap reveals AAVE’s market capitalization to be $1.38 billion, with a 24-hour volume of $600 million, posting a 37.75% loss. The circulating supply sits at 15.9 million out of a total of 16 million. Still, the community sentiment remains as resilient as a rubber ball, with 82% of voters calling the outlook bullish versus 18% bearish. Stiff upper lip, old boy!
The Snowball Effect
Though Aave wasn’t directly compromised, this little episode has shown just how quickly things can go pear-shaped when one system goes awry. The team is already on the case, finding ways to manage the losses without overly diluting the staking token holders. If the safety module and treasury do their job, Aave might still stage a comeback. In any case, this $292 million DeFi disaster is a stark reminder that bridge breaches are not to be taken lightly, what?
