Just three months after it began airing, Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale spinoff is a huge hit and ranks as the second most popular series on Disney+ globally, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Season 1 of The Testaments launched on April 8th to generally good reviews. It quickly became a popular hit on Disney+, reaching the top 10 in over 60 countries and continuing to rank among the top 3 shows in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay – even two months after the season ended.
What Is The Testaments About?
The Testaments is a continuation of the popular dystopian series available on Hulu. Like the original series, The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s based on a novel by Margaret Atwood. While the novel The Testaments is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the new series picks up only a few years later, following the fight to free Boston from the oppressive regime of Gilead.
The Testaments introduces a new group of young women growing up under the oppressive rule of a fascist government in North America. The story centers on Agnes, played by Chase Infiniti, and Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday, and also brings back Ann Dowd as the iconic Aunt Lydia from The Handmaid’s Tale.
Agnes, June’s daughter Hannah, was raised within the oppressive society of Gilead and eventually rejects its harsh treatment of women and general cruelty. Even with a privileged position, she chooses to fight against the government. Meanwhile, Daisy arrives in Gilead from the outside world and secretly works as a teenage spy for the Mayday resistance. Viewers later discover a heartbreaking connection between Daisy and the very regime she’s trying to overthrow.
Critics and Audiences Loved The Testaments
Currently, critics give The Testaments an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences score it at 81%. Reviewers generally enjoyed the new series, though it faced high expectations following the success of The Handmaid’s Tale.
One reviewer noted that while The Handmaid’s Tale created a powerfully unsettling dystopian world, The Testaments is a remarkably strong and fulfilling sequel, especially considering the original’s emotional ending. Variety also praised The Testaments as an excellent continuation of the first series.
Viewers generally enjoyed the show, with many praising the acting as “fantastic” and considering it a strong continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale. However, the biggest sign of its success was the consistently high number of people watching since it first aired. The season finale even broke records, becoming the most highly rated season finale on IMDb.
The release of The Testaments happened just a week before the first season ended in May. There’s no news yet on when the second season will begin.
The Testaments Season 1 is streaming on Hulu.
