Summary
- Upgrading the handheld’s display to a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED panel with 1,400-nit peak brightness and Dolby Vision support
- Introducing drift-resistant GuliKit TMR joysticks and a transforming D-pad that alternates between four-way and eight-way control
Asus has launched the ROG Ally X20, a special edition portable gaming PC created to mark the 20th anniversary of its Republic of Gamers line. This new version features a unique see-through design and a major upgrade to the display. It replaces the older LCD screen with a vibrant 7.4-inch OLED screen boasting a fast 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1,400 nits. With support for VESA DisplayHDR 1000 and Dolby Vision, gamers will enjoy incredible contrast and color. An anti-glare coating also reduces reflections by 65%, making it easier to play outdoors.
The latest updates address frequent complaints about comfort and how long the device lasts. Asus teamed up with GuliKit to include new joysticks that use magnets to prevent drifting. The main controls now feature a D-pad that can switch between normal and more precise eight-way movement for fighting games. The often-criticized Library button has been replaced with a button for quickly taking screenshots and videos. The buttons on the front are now level with the device’s surface, making it easier to slide your thumb across them.
Okay, so under the hood, the ROG Ally X20 isn’t a huge leap from the original. It’s still rocking the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, and they kept the 24GB of super-fast RAM and the 1TB SSD. Basically, it’s a refresh focusing on looks and the screen. Thankfully, it still has Auto Super Resolution, which uses AI to boost frame rates in those really demanding games. The good news is, all my existing optimized handheld games should work perfectly!
There’s a catch for those wanting to buy the new Asus console: it will initially be sold only as part of a pricey holiday bundle. This bundle includes high-end ROG XReal R1 Edition 20 gaming glasses, which project a large, incredibly smooth virtual display – imagine a 171-inch screen with a 240Hz refresh rate – and track your head movements for a more immersive experience. These glasses usually cost $850 on their own, so combining them with the console means the overall price will likely be very high when preorders open later this year.
