Backrooms Franchise Plans Officially Confirmed By Kane Parsons

Kane Parsons has confirmed the future plans for the horror franchise, Backrooms.

The new sci-fi horror film Backrooms, from A24, is now in theaters and getting good reviews. It’s based on a popular series of videos created by Parsons on YouTube. He first uploaded The Backrooms (Found Footage) in January 2022, and it quickly gained a large following, now with over 3.1 million subscribers and a total of more than 200 million views across all his videos.

In a recent interview with Polygon, director Kane Parsons talked about the future of his film, Backrooms. Parsons, who is A24’s youngest director ever, explained that he has plenty of ideas and work ahead of him. He mentioned he’d taken the original YouTube series as far as he could, and was surprised by how quickly the project has progressed.

According to Parsons, continuing the story beyond the YouTube series isn’t just a possibility – it’s been the plan since 2022. While he initially thought a feature film would take much longer to develop, it ultimately became a viable path. This movie is intended to be the first of many installments, allowing the story to fully explore the core concepts. He believes a single film wouldn’t provide enough time to delve into the heart of the idea.

Following the popularity of Backrooms, Kane Parsons is considering various options for the future. He acknowledges that many things could change, but his ideal outcome would be to expand the first movie into a series of films exploring different genres. Despite this ambition, Parsons also wants to continue creating content for YouTube, though perhaps not as extensively as before.

The idea of filmmakers starting on YouTube and then moving to big-screen movies is relatively recent, but it’s becoming more common. Directors like David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and even Bo Burnham all began their careers creating content for YouTube. However, how studios and producers work with these artists and support their future projects differs greatly from one filmmaker to another.

Parsons isn’t sure how A24 feels about his ongoing YouTube work, but he thinks they’re generally okay with it. He believes A24 is aware of what he’s creating, and likely saw it beforehand. Importantly, they’ve given him a lot of creative freedom, trusting his decisions about how to share his work with viewers. Because of this, Parsons doesn’t think they’d want to stop him if his approach is effective and engaging.

The ongoing conversations and Parsons’ commitment to filmmaking suggest we can expect much more content in the future. While the exact style might shift – the creators don’t want to be limited by a single genre – upcoming stories could focus on character-driven drama within a suspenseful, tech-focused world. This openness to change is a good thing, as it will keep the story fresh and allow the filmmakers to fully explore the themes they’re interested in.

As a film fan, I’m really excited about the potential for future movies set in the world of The Backrooms – or as fans call it, “The Complex.” It all started with this incredibly creepy image someone posted on 4chan back in May 2019, and that image inspired the creator, Parsons, to build this amazing, detailed backstory around the Async Research Institute. Hopefully, any upcoming films will really dive into all that cool lore!

A24’s Backrooms is now playing exclusively in theaters.
