Following significant changes at CBS’ “60 Minutes,” former correspondent Cecilia Vega revealed she felt pressured to slant her reporting with political opinions and experienced attempts to suppress her stories.
Vega expressed concern about the future of the long-running news program “60 Minutes” in a social media post on Thursday.
After three years with the newsmagazine, Vega was let go, along with executive producer Tanya Simon and correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi. Alfonsi had previously had disagreements with CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss regarding a report on President Trump’s policies related to immigration.
This recent change comes after a series of debated decisions made by Weiss, who is determined to modernize CBS News, a network historically known for its established practices. She joined CBS News in October with a background solely in digital media, brought in by Paramount CEO David Ellison after he purchased her online publication, The Free Press, and tasked her with revitalizing the network.

Nick Bilton will replace executive producer Tanya Simon, a 26-year veteran of the program.
Concerns are being raised about the political motivations of Ellison, who owns the company that controls CBS. He and his father, Larry Ellison, developed a close relationship with the Trump administration while Paramount is still awaiting approval for its purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery.
After Ellison stated CBS News should aim for more moderate political coverage, many believe the network is attempting to appease Donald Trump by presenting more favorable news stories, despite continued critical reporting from “60 Minutes” regarding the White House.
In a message to staff, Weiss explained that their goal is to maintain the show’s important history and purpose by evolving ’60 Minutes’ for modern audiences. This means moving beyond a traditional one-hour TV show and increasing its presence throughout CBS News.
I was really disturbed to read Vega’s statement. She says that lately, she and her team have been facing pressure to push a certain political viewpoint in their stories, which is awful. Even more concerning, she mentioned that reporters are actually hesitant to suggest stories they believe in, because they’re worried about getting in trouble internally. It’s just really disheartening to hear that creative freedom is being stifled like that.

After two decades reporting for CBS’ ‘60 Minutes,’ Anderson Cooper announced he’s leaving the show. He shared an emotional farewell during Sunday’s broadcast.
Vega directly called this censorship, happening both when people are told what to do and when they limit themselves. She believes it harms the show and threatens democracy.
During her time at “60 Minutes,” she prioritized factual reporting and resisted any editorial choices she felt were unreliable.
Vega shared that she’s heard from many coworkers at ’60 Minutes’ about ongoing struggles to report freely and independently. She explained that she, like other correspondents, has often wondered how far she can push for the truth before facing negative consequences for doing so.
A spokesperson for CBS News could not be reached for comment.
In 2023, Vega made history as the first Latina correspondent for the newsmagazine. Prior to this, she spent more than ten years at ABC News, where she served as the chief White House correspondent and also co-hosted “Good Morning America.”

I was really troubled to learn about the “Inside CECOT” event hosted by Bari Weiss last December. It felt like a clear instance of someone potentially using their position to push a certain political agenda, and it definitely raised some red flags for me.
Journalists such as John Quiñones from ABC and Jorge Ramos, formerly of Univision, publicly voiced their support for Vega’s statements. Quiñones praised her voice, courage, and storytelling, saying it strengthens journalism, while Ramos shared his respect and admiration for her in a Spanish-language post.
