As a researcher tracking crypto activity, I’ve noticed some interesting accumulation of HYPE tokens. Our analysis shows that wallets we’ve linked to a16z crypto have been steadily buying HYPE since mid-April, and now hold over $90 million worth. This makes them the sixth-largest holder of HYPE overall, and potentially the biggest institutional investor outside of the Hyperliquid team itself.

Key Takeaways:
- Wallets linked to a16z crypto have accumulated 2.11M HYPE worth $90.87M since mid-April.
- The position ranks 6th largest among HYPE holders, with 1.3M tokens worth $51M staked long-term.
- Bitwise’s BHYP ETF and 21shares’ THYP now give U.S. investors regulated exposure to HYPE in 2026.
Data Points to a16z as the Largest External HYPE Holder
Wallet address 0xb5E4, whose funding history and transaction patterns multiple analysts have linked to a16z crypto, has purchased approximately 2.11 million HYPE since April 14, 2026.
On May 18th, the wallet bought another 372,000 HYPE for $16.9 million within three hours. This brings the total value of all HYPE purchased over the past 34 days to $90.87 million.
Bitcoin.com News reported on the accumulation earlier this week as the position crossed the $90 million mark across 34 days of buying activity.

With HYPE currently trading around $48, the total value of holdings in related wallets is about $418 million, resulting in an estimated profit of $79.29 million.
Currently, about 1.3 million HYPE tokens, valued at $51 million, have been staked. This is a strong indication that people believe in Hyperliquid long-term, because these staked tokens help secure the network and earn rewards, rather than being available for quick selling.
While a16z hasn’t officially stated they own the wallet, analysts have linked it to them based on how funds were moved. This method is generally accurate, but there’s always a small chance of error.
Hyperliquid Ecosystem Growth and Institutional Traction
HYPE is the native token of Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange ( DEX) that allows users to trade leveraged perpetual contracts without routing through a centralized intermediary. The platform hit $10.1 billion in open interest earlier this year, establishing it as one of the most actively used onchain trading venues in the market.
HYPE has also attracted formal exchange-traded fund (ETF) interest as Bitwise launched the BHYP spot ETF, recording $4.31 million on its debut day, reportedly the largest opening day for a U.S. spot altcoin ETF in 2026. 21shares followed with its THYP offering (on Nasdaq) soon after.
If confirmed, an a16z position of this scale would represent a significant institutional endorsement of Hyperliquid’s model, one that bets on onchain derivatives volumes continuing to migrate away from centralized exchanges.
