Interestingly, the USS Enterprise-E, captained after Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), served for twice as long as the original Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Enterprise-D, a Galaxy-class ship and the central vessel of TNG, was famous for seven seasons before being destroyed in the film Star Trek Generations.
The USS Enterprise-D, a state-of-the-art starship, first appeared in the premiere episode, “Encounter at Farpoint,” of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Launched in 2364 as the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, Captain Picard and his crew, including First Officer William Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes), were still settling in aboard the new vessel at the beginning of the series.
Each season of Star Trek: The Next Generation represented one year in the show’s timeline. This means the USS Enterprise-D was in service for seven years, from 2364 to 2371, leading directly into the events of Star Trek Generations. Following the Enterprise-D’s destruction on Veridian III, Starfleet quickly moved to give Captain Picard a new ship.
Captain Picard’s USS Enterprise-E Lasted Twice As Long As TNG’s Enterprise-D
The USS Enterprise-E actually served for twice as long as the USS Enterprise-D. Built to combat the Borg, this Sovereign-class starship debuted in 2372 as Starfleet’s most cutting-edge vessel. By 2373, during the events of Star Trek: First Contact, the Enterprise-E had finished its initial test runs and was fully prepared to face the Borg.
The USS Enterprise-E served for approximately 14 years, which was twice as long as the Enterprise-D’s 7-year lifespan. Captain Picard commanded the Enterprise-E in three Star Trek: The Next Generation films: Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis, with the events of the final film taking place in 2379.
The fate of the USS Enterprise-E remains unknown. Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard hinted that the ship was lost in an accident, and its former captain, Worf (Michael Dorn), maintains he wasn’t responsible. Perhaps Star Trek will one day reveal the official story of what happened to the Enterprise-E.
As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I always wondered about the next Enterprise. It’s cool to know the Odyssey-class USS Enterprise-F launched in 2386! It basically means the Enterprise-E must have been destroyed by then. Thinking about it, the Enterprise-E actually served for fourteen years – double the seven years the beloved Enterprise-D was out exploring. That’s a pretty impressive run for a starship!
Why The USS Enterprise-D Feels Like It Lasted Longer Than Picard’s Replacement
It’s easy to see why people might not realize the USS Enterprise-E was in service for twice as long as the USS Enterprise-D. The Enterprise-E only appeared in three Star Trek movies, meaning viewers only spent a maximum of six hours watching it with a new captain.
For seven seasons and 178 episodes, plus the film Star Trek Generations, fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation explored the galaxy aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Because every episode took place on the ship, viewers got to know its every corner, from the bridge to the recreation areas like Ten Forward and the holodecks. For many fans, the Enterprise-D wasn’t just a spaceship—it felt like a second home.
Unlike previous films, Star Trek: First Contact really showed off the inside of the USS Enterprise-E while Captain Picard battled the Borg. However, viewers didn’t have as much time to connect with the Enterprise-E as they did with the earlier ship, the Enterprise-D.
By the end of the movie Star Trek: Nemesis, the USS Enterprise-E had been in service for the same seven years as the original USS Enterprise-D. Later, events involving the Enterprise-E were referenced in the shows Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy. The animated series Lower Decks and Prodigy also briefly featured the ship itself.
The USS Enterprise-E definitely has its fans, but the USS Enterprise-D holds a special place in many hearts. For a whole generation of Star Trek viewers, the Enterprise-D is the definitive Enterprise. That’s why seeing the Enterprise-D return, and its famous bridge recreated, in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was so emotional for fans – it even brought some to tears.
Picard Was Captain Of USS Enterprise-E Longer Than Enterprise-D (Barely)
Jean-Luc Picard captained the USS Enterprise-D throughout its seven-year mission, except for a few episodes where Will Riker and Edward Jellico temporarily took command. Interestingly, he actually served as captain of the USS Enterprise-E for a bit longer than he did the Enterprise-D.
In 2372, Picard quietly took over command of the USS Enterprise-E and remained its captain for roughly nine years. He was then promoted to Admiral by Starfleet in 2381 and assigned to lead the Federation’s effort to help the Romulans, whose star was about to explode.
After Riker took command of the USS Titan and Data (played by Brent Spiner) passed away following the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, Worf was promoted to Captain of the USS Enterprise-E. He led the Enterprise during its appearances in the Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy series, serving as Captain for approximately five years.
The Star Trek series haven’t officially revealed who the regular Captain of the USS Enterprise-F was. However, Admiral Elizabeth Shelby was given the honorary title of Captain of the Enterprise-F for a special event in the final season of Star Trek: Picard. At the end of that same season, Seven of Nine was appointed Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.
Despite Captain Picard only commanding the USS Enterprise-E in three Star Trek: The Next Generation movies, the total time shown in those films is about the same as his seven years as Captain of the USS Enterprise-D.
In the third season of Star Trek: Picard, the restored USS Enterprise-D once again saved the galaxy from the Borg, giving the iconic Galaxy-class ship from Star Trek: The Next Generation a memorable final adventure. While it’s unlikely, there’s still a chance the USS Enterprise-E could be brought back in the future.
