Renowned American artist and activist Nan Goldin will be showcased in London for the first time in over two decades. Her exhibition, You Never Did Anything Wrong, will open at the Hayward Gallery this November.

Nan Goldin, famous for documenting life in 1980s New York, is celebrated for her intimate and emotionally raw photographs. For half a century, she’s been a leading figure in modern photography, bringing it into the mainstream art world with honest and touching images that create a strong connection between the viewer and her subjects.

The upcoming exhibition features key pieces from Nan Goldin’s personal and revealing body of work, which the Southbank Centre’s Artistic Director, Mark Ball, calls a “powerful and honest portrayal of human connection and strength.” This show follows closely after the UK premiere of her opera, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, at Gagosian London earlier in the year.

She focuses much of her work on sharing the stories of people and communities often overlooked by mainstream media, including the queer and post-punk cultures of the 1980s and 90s, and more recently, advocating for human rights and peace for those impacted by the situation in Gaza.

According to Rachel Thomas, Head Curator at the Roden, this major exhibition will finally give UK audiences a comprehensive look at the remarkable life and work of Nan. The show at the Hayward Gallery is an opportunity to explore how personal stories and political activism are linked, and to see a powerful and moving portrayal of what it means to be human.

The exhibition, You Never Did Anything Wrong, will be open to the public from November 24th until March 7th, 2027, at Hayward. You can find more information on the Southbank Centre website.
