Fans in Toronto used tools like blowtorches and hammers on a 25-foot ice sculpture to discover the release date of Drake’s new album. Yes, you read that correctly!
Okay, so if you somehow missed it, my favorite rapper just did something insane! A few weeks ago, he put up this massive ice sculpture in the parking lot of this famous hotel. Then he dropped a post on Instagram saying, “ICEMAN release date in here.” Seriously, that’s all it took! The whole Toronto area went wild. Everyone – content creators, fans like me, even the fire department – rushed over to check it out. It was crazy! Some people even brought things to melt the ice, trying to figure out what the release date was hidden inside. It was a total scene!
With temperatures freezing, there’s a lot riding on Drake’s upcoming album release. He’s aiming for a fresh start, and his reputation depends on how people react to the music. The album has been a long time coming – almost two years – and has actually created more anticipation and stronger opinions among listeners, who are now very eager to share what they think.

The foundation for Drake’s upcoming album, ICEMAN, was built on the highly publicized rap rivalry with Kendrick Lamar in mid-2024. Their feud, which had been rumored for years, finally exploded into direct disses and even legal action. Lamar went on to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, while Drake largely withdrew from public view. While ICEMAN is currently the focus of a lot of musical conversation, it’s unclear if the album’s actual quality will matter. Expectations are incredibly high, but also all over the place – everyone wants something different from Drake with this release. Some fans want the ‘old Drake,’ others the ‘new Drake,’ and still others want to see him respond to the narrative that Lamar ‘won’ their beef. People are already declaring the album a failure if it doesn’t satisfy every possible expectation, or a classic before it’s even out. Regardless of what most people actually think, ICEMAN is already generating a lot of criticism, and that’s likely to continue.
The project began taking shape over 600 days ago. Hints started appearing as early as August 2024, shortly after the release of the rapper’s 100 GIGS EP. He began teasing his ninth project on social media, characteristically posting seemingly random photos of Formula 1 driver Kimi Räikkönen and actor Val Kilmer – both known as “Iceman.” He also shared a screenshot of a music folder named “2.0 – ICEMAN” across his main account and several anonymous ones.
The album ICEMAN was first revealed with a livestream on July 4, 2025, titled “ICEMAN EPISODE 1.” The stream attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers and introduced the visual style of the album. It featured a bright blue color and distinctive lettering. Throughout the nearly hour-long stream, Drake explored an empty warehouse that hinted at the album’s themes. He then debuted the lead single, “What Did I Miss?,” which was released on streaming services the following day. Drake also drove around Toronto in a truck branded with the ICEMAN logo. Fans closely analyzed every detail of the footage, searching for clues and hidden meanings. A short preview of the song “Supermax” was also included, leading to more snippets being shared throughout the album’s promotion.
Following the release of his first single, Drake headlined all three nights of Wireless Festival in the UK. Each night featured different surprise guests, but his choices highlighted the importance of the UK rap scene to his new project. He brought out both established star Central Cee and rising underground artist fakemink, bringing together mainstream and emerging talent. Fakemink is widely expected to be featured on the upcoming project.
The second installment of “ICEMAN” took a different direction than the first, adopting a more dramatic and staged feel with the surprise appearance of a Pinocchio character. The stream featured Pinocchio pursuing Drake through the streets of Manchester, leading many viewers to connect the character—known for his lies and growing nose—to Kendrick Lamar, suggesting themes of deception and fabricated stories. The stream ended with a message displayed at Manchester’s Piccadilly station, announcing “ICEMAN” is “COMING SOON,” with the letter “I” replaced by Pinocchio’s head. While changing its approach from the initial episode, the livestream continued to use the distinctive blue color scheme. Central Cee’s new track, “Which One,” premiered during the stream, ahead of its official release on music platforms the next day.
The final livestream, “EPISODE 3,” brought Pinocchio back – this time in Milan. This concluding chapter felt more like a movie, showcasing Drake in luxurious settings. Pinocchio appeared multiple times, with a group sitting at a dinner table while one wrote “LEGACY” in red paint, which was then covered with ice. Fans quickly debated what this meant, with many believing it symbolized Drake trying to protect his reputation from those who try to damage it. The episode also premiered Drake’s new song, “DOG HOUSE,” featuring Yeat and Julia Wolf, a collaboration that surprised and excited fans. He also previewed a remix of his track “Somebody Loves Me” from his February 2025 album, $OME $EXY $ONGS 4 U, now titled “Somebody Loves Me. Pt 2” and featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and Cash Cobain.
The three livestreams attracted over 2.9 million viewers, leading to more streams featuring Adin Ross and the release of previously unreleased songs. One song mentioned DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard, while another, “1AM In Albany,” which was leaked just hours before the album release, directly criticizes Lamar. It’s unclear what impact these leaks will have, but they definitely grabbed people’s attention and focused it on the project, regardless of whether the leaked snippets make it onto the final album.
Okay, so the Drake rollout just went to another level! I couldn’t believe it when I saw pictures of him covering his courtside seats with faux ice – seriously! Then, things got even crazier with this massive music video shoot, ‘Project Bot,’ that caused a small explosion near the airport. Drake teased it all on his Instagram story, which of course, just sent fans like me into overdrive trying to figure out what it all means. It’s been a wild ride!
Drake took his unconventional marketing to a new extreme by building a huge ice structure outside Toronto’s Bond Hotel. The release date for his project, ICEMAN, was frozen at the base of the 25-foot ice pyramid. Almost immediately, a crowd gathered, eager to get a glimpse of the date. People showed up with tools like pickaxes and blowtorches, ready to break apart the ice to reveal it.
Streamer Kishka discovered a waterproof blue bag with the words “FREEZE THE WORLD” printed on it at the base of a sculpture, all while broadcasting live to his viewers. Aidan Ross then suggested Kishka take the bag to Drake’s house and open it on stream. Standing outside Drake’s home, Kishka unboxed the bag’s contents, revealing an ICEMAN zine, a release date of May 15th, and $100,000 in cash.
This zine further explores the world of ICEMAN through over 60 pages of concept art, old prints, and updated graphic designs. While Sexyy Red makes an appearance, the zine doesn’t reveal much else about its contents or featured artists.
The announcement of Kishka’s release date marked the final big in-person event for the ICEMAN promotion. Since then, the campaign has shifted to an online strategy, largely driven by Drake’s social media presence. Earlier this week, Toronto’s CN Tower was lit up in blue, leading many to believe it was another part of the ICEMAN rollout.

Drake released his zine on a dedicated website for his ICEMAN project, along with a tool that creates text in the ICEMAN style and a live view of the CN Tower. He also temporarily took down his main news site. Now, he’s taking a break while fans eagerly await the next installment – not his album, but ICEMAN Episode 4, which will premiere live on YouTube at 9:45 p.m. EST.
Public reaction, especially on social media, is divided. Some people think his extended album release strategy was innovative and brought a welcome change to how albums are launched, feeling carefully planned despite its unpredictability. Others see it as cheesy and a blatant marketing ploy. Most, though, believe that none of it matters if the music itself isn’t truly exceptional. Drake put a lot of effort into building anticipation for the album, and that created enormous expectations. He made big promises, essentially raising the bar so high it was almost impossible to clear. Whether all the hype actually worked remains to be seen, but it definitely got people talking – it made a significant impact, much like a massive iceberg can cause a disaster.
