Nicola Coughlan set to reprise role in two sequels to “special” British movie hit

Nicola Coughlan, known for her role in Bridgerton, is likely to return for two upcoming sequels to the fantasy film The Magic Faraway Tree. The movie, which is based on Enid Blyton’s popular book series, was released in UK cinemas in March and featured Coughlan as part of the main cast.

According to Screen International, Neal Street Productions and Elysian Film Group are developing two new films. Simon Farnaby is writing the screenplays, and Ben Gregor will direct, marking a return for both of them to the project.

Claire Foy, Andrew Garfield, and Rebecca Ferguson are all likely to return for the next installments of the film series. Digital Spy has contacted Neal Street Productions for further information.

I thought this movie was a really great family watch – I gave it three stars! It’s about three siblings whose parents, played by Vanessa Foy and Andrew Garfield, move them out to the countryside, and they end up discovering this amazing, magical world. It’s just a fun story!

Coughlan stars as the fairy Silky, alongside Jessica Gunning, known for Baby Reindeer, who plays Dame Washalot, and Ferguson as Dame Snap.

Pippa Harris from Neal Street Productions said they’re considering filming the second and third books in The Magic Faraway Tree series back-to-back, to see if it’s a practical approach, according to Screen International.

Harris, currently directing Sony’s four films about The Beatles, joked that after managing four projects simultaneously, taking on just two wouldn’t be a challenge.

The production team is aiming to start filming in 2027 and wants to begin work on both sequel movies as soon as possible. According to producer Harris, “The faster we can start, the better.”

The child actors are essential to the film doing well, so it’s important to film now. If you wait too long, the kids will grow up and become teenagers, which wouldn’t work for the story.

Nicola Coughlan has confirmed she’ll be in season five of Bridgerton, but with a smaller part. This season will center on the romance between Francesca and Michaela, and will also reveal who the new Lady Whistledown is after Penelope, played by Coughlan, decided to stop writing the gossip column to focus on other writing projects.

The Magic Faraway Tree is available to buy or rent digitally on Prime Video and Apple TV.
