Okay, so Rei Kawakubo and COMME des GARÇONS are basically taking over the Independent Art Fair in New York this week, and it’s a huge deal. CDG is always connected to both art and fashion, but this is the first time Rei Kawakubo’s ever done a solo show at a New York art fair. It’s a big step for her, especially since her amazing exhibit at the Met back in 2017. I’m really excited to see what she brings to the table!

The fair has found a new home at Pier 36 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and a unique installation marks the spot. Designer Rei Kawakubo created the space specifically for this location, constructing it from metal bars and brightly colored plastic connectors. Inside, you’ll find 20 clothing and accessory pieces she’s selected from her work over the past five years.

Elizabeth Dee deliberately highlighted this exhibit as the main attraction, aiming to inject some energy and originality into the often corporate-driven art scene. Rei Kawakubo, known for working at her own pace, wanted to present these pieces outside of any specific time frame or seasonal context, effectively giving them a fresh, revitalized feel.

Each unique piece was created in a limited edition of three or fewer, and only one of each is available to buy at the event, ranging in price from $9,000 to $30,000. The event ends on May 17th, so don’t wait if you’re interested!
