I first discovered Steve Earle’s song “City of Immigrants” when his album Washington Square Serenade was released in 2007. As a longtime fan, I always check out his new music right away, and I immediately connected with this song. I especially appreciated its upbeat tune and positive message about welcoming people from all backgrounds.
I didn’t truly appreciate the song until I saw Earle perform it live about ten years after it came out. It was at the City Winery in Washington, DC – a city full of people from all over the world. Hearing him introduce the song and sing it in that small, cozy venue had a much bigger impact on me than just listening to the recorded version.
Okay, so I gotta say, hearing him play that song live, just him and his guitar, actually made me notice something. That really long bridge in the middle of the studio version? It didn’t hit quite as hard live, honestly. That little lyrical hook that repeats in that bridge… it just didn’t have the same impact when stretched out for so long.
“All of us are immigrants
Every daughter, every son
Everyone is everyone
All of us are immigrants”
The section isn’t bad on its own, but it feels too lengthy and takes away from the overall song. It felt less disruptive when it was just him singing.
Steve Earle rereleases a classic just when we need it most
Earle just shared a new video for a song that’s nearly 20 years old, and the release was carefully planned.
Well-known actor Steve Buscemi directed the video, which feels like a short travel film showcasing the streets and neighborhoods of Manhattan and other parts of New York City. It was filmed in a realistic, documentary style by Martin DiCicco, a talented cinematographer who previously worked on the award-winning documentary Union (2024) and Brett Story’s climate change film The Hottest August (2019).
Buscemi’s performance starts with Earle appearing on stage at New York’s Gramercy Theater, playing a unique stringed instrument called a bouzouki. He shares that while it originally comes from Greece, he tunes it like an Irish instrument. He believes this blend of influences makes it ideal for the song he’s about to play.
Next, we see Earle walking through the city, connecting with people from all walks of life with friendly greetings and high-fives. Throughout his journey, the meaning of his songs really becomes clear…
I live in a city full of people from all over the world, so I don’t need to travel to experience different cultures. Every time I step outside my door, I’m greeted by the world.
The idea that ‘opening my door lets the world in’ perfectly captures the most debated issue today, not just in the US, but globally. Earle focuses on the positive aspects of this diversity, while others worry about the risks of open borders and welcoming too many people.
I have to say, Earle and his team really nailed it with this short film. It’s just beautifully done and makes a really strong point. What inspired them – seeing what ICE was doing in the US – you’d think it might be heavy or controversial, but honestly, it’s the opposite! Buscemi’s visuals are pure happiness – everyone’s smiling and dancing, it’s a joy to watch.
Honestly, even the issue I was having with the bridge – the one I mentioned earlier – just doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore after watching this. Seeing everyone’s faces and how much it means just makes any little complaints feel totally unimportant.
Steve Earle has always been open about his political beliefs. Rooted in the tradition of outlaw country, he believes supporting workers’ rights and helping those in need are core American principles.
He believes most Americans aren’t strongly Republican or Democrat, but fall somewhere in between – they just want practical solutions to real issues. Many of his songs reflect this viewpoint, and “City of Immigrants” is a particularly strong example.
In 2026, it may well be his most important.
