It’s become clear that audiences love two things: pop stars battling monsters and thrilling car chases – as seen with the popularity of shows on Netflix and the Fast & Furious movies. Now, fans who’ve wished these unlikely worlds would collide are in luck, because that combination is coming soon.
Image Comics has a thrilling new series coming out in the summer of 2026 called M1: Monster Racing League. It’s a high-octane blend of action and excitement, perfect for fans of both KPop Demon Hunters and the Fast & Furious franchise.
Seventeen-year-old Dev Raines is uprooted from her life in San Diego and forced to move with her dad to Tokyo. She has a hard time adjusting to a new country, missing her friends and feeling like an outsider. But her life changes when she stumbles upon a hidden world of high-stakes, Formula 1-inspired street racing where drivers and their vehicles undergo incredible transformations to win.
The comic M1: Monster Racing League delivers a fast-paced, exciting experience, much like the Fast & Furious movies. It particularly feels similar to the 2006 Tokyo Drift film, where the main character moves to Tokyo and becomes skilled in a distinctive form of street racing.
It’s still unclear what the comic is really about. The only clue we have is the tagline “mutation wins championships.” Does this mean the racers will be driving vehicles that are secretly disguised creatures—a strange take on the Transformers idea? Or will the racers themselves slowly transform into monsters as a result of competing, in a way that recalls the body horror of David Cronenberg’s work?
The best way to learn more about M1: Monster Racing League is to read it when it’s released. Fortunately, some interested readers have already gotten a sneak peek!
A Preview for M1: Monster Racing League #1 Is Available
Image Comics recently shared a preview of the first issue of M1: Monster Racing League. While it doesn’t deliver on the fast-paced action hinted at in its description, the preview does a good job of introducing the character Dev and showing how she’s settling into her new surroundings.
I’m really getting into this series! The preview focuses on the main character finally making a friend in Tokyo – a girl named Marise. They instantly connect over their love of cats at this adorable cat cafe, and she starts telling Marise about how she’s planning to get back at her dad for moving her all the way from home. Then things get crazy! They almost get hit by a speeding biker, but this mysterious person in a hood saves them just in time. It’s a total cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I was immediately hooked by the very first page of the preview for M1: Monster Racing League! It shows this mysterious, hooded figure standing under a beautiful Cherry Blossom tree, looking out over a futuristic Tokyo. And get this – there are these giant bees buzzing around their head! It definitely hints that Dev is going to face some seriously huge bugs as monsters during her adventure, and I’m already so excited to see what they are!
The stunning artwork comes from Jae Lee, a celebrated illustrator who has won an Eisner Award. He’s well-known for his work on Marvel’s Inhumans and for creating Hellshock with Image Comics in the 90s. For M1: Monster Racing League, Lee is working again with Robert and Lily Windom, a father-daughter team of writers who previously collaborated on the 2023 fantasy graphic novel, Family Time.
M1: Monster Racing League #1 hits the shelves on June 10.
