After a successful run in cinemas, the sci-fi film became available on digital platforms on May 12th. It’s still showing in some theaters, and the digital release is expected to build on that success.
Just one day after its release, Project Hail Mary is proving to be a hit online. It reached the top spot on both the Apple TV and Google digital stores in the U.S. Even with a low-key launch, the sci-fi film currently ranks third on Amazon, fourth on Apple TV, and fifth on Google.
Despite initial challenges, the film performed well after its release on March 20th. It remained in theaters long enough to encourage audiences to see it in cinemas.
Watching Project Hail Mary in a theater is a great experience, especially on a large screen. But it’s also perfect to rewatch at home before it becomes available on Prime Video. While Amazon hasn’t announced a specific date, it’s expected to start streaming sometime early this summer.
After quickly rising to the top spot, Project Hail Mary knocked Avatar: Fire and Ash off the charts on its first day. The popular science fiction novel has also been gaining significant traction.
Project Hail Mary Is the Perfect The Martian Follow-Up
While new science fiction movies are always coming out, few have reached the same level of popularity as The Martian. Released in 2015, the film appealed to both dedicated science fiction fans and general audiences, thanks to director Ridley Scott’s skillful combination of humor, realistic science, and suspenseful moments.
Both The Martian and Project Hail Mary achieved similar popularity, and for good reason. They’re both based on novels by Andy Weir, and while each tells a separate story, they both take place in space and involve a desperate fight for survival.
Both stories share a common creative force in screenwriter Drew Goddard. One is about an astronaut mistakenly believed dead who is stranded on Mars, while the other, Project Hail Mary, centers on a teacher-scientist named Dr. Ryland Grace who awakens on a spaceship with amnesia, only to find he’s responsible for saving the world.
Project Hail Mary Surpassed The Martian’s Box Office Gross
Since its release on March 20th, Project Hail Mary has become a major box office hit, earning $656.3 million worldwide. This is particularly good news for Amazon, as the film – which cost $200 million to make – is now the studio’s most successful movie to date.
The film earned $653.6 million worldwide and has become a hugely popular science fiction movie. When you include sales of DVDs and Blu-rays, it’s made over $704.3 million total. Factoring in inflation, the 2015 release would have grossed a little over $910 million in today’s money, according to In2013Dollars.
Chris Miller and Phil Lord directed and produced the film, with additional production credits going to Ryan Gosling, Amy Pascal, Andy Weir, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor. Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce also appear in the movie.
You can now rent or buy Project Hail Mary online, and it’s still showing in some cinemas.
