Westworld Is Returning, But It Doesn’t Look Like Anything To Me

Okay, so I’m really excited – apparently, they’re making a Westworld movie! Warner Bros. Discovery is behind it, which is great news. And get this – David Koepp is writing the script! The guy’s a legend – he did Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, and that really cool, twisty spy movie Black Bag with Steven Soderbergh last year. I have high hopes for this one!

Just to manage expectations, this new Westworld movie isn’t expected to continue the story from the HBO series that sci-fi fans loved. Instead, it will likely retell the story from the first season of Westworld.

The show’s initial season is exceptionally well-done, and its ending shouldn’t be touched. David Koepp should focus on finishing the story begun in season four, specifically the cliffhanger where Dolores returns to a virtual reality she calls “one last game.” This would explore whether consciousness can exist independently of the physical world.

HBO’s Westworld successfully adapted one of the greatest science fiction settings ever created for television. However, if David Koepp and Warner Bros. move forward with a reboot without the original showrunners, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the result could be significantly weaker in both its visual style and overall ideas.

Westworld’s TV Story Remains Frustratingly Incomplete

In a 2024 interview, Jonathan Nolan said he wished Westworld had a proper ending. The HBO series was canceled after only four seasons, cutting short the story he had planned. While the fourth season does feel like a conclusion—with several key characters dying—it ends on a cliffhanger that intentionally suggests the story could continue.

Evan Rachel Wood’s character, Dolores Abernathy, appears to be starting a new life in the Sublime – a perfect, digital world created by the person who designed the Westworld theme park. The fact that this development is called “one last game” suggests that Dolores’s story will soon come to an end.

The way the final monologue was written suggests the creators, Nolan and Alison Schapker, didn’t believe the fourth season would be the end of Westworld. There’s also a hint that the planned fifth season, referred to as the “last loop,” might bring back characters who were previously killed.

As a huge fan, I’m really excited about Dolores going back to the original Westworld park! It got me thinking – because she’s building this new world from her memories, she could potentially recreate anyone she’s met before as a digital copy. It’s such a cool, *Matrixlike idea, but honestly, with the show ending, I doubt we’ll ever actually see if she pulls it off. It’s a shame!

The future of consciousness within the world of Westworld remains unresolved after season 4, as season 5 was cancelled before addressing the questions raised by Dolores in its final moments. Surprisingly, the newly announced Westworld movie actually makes it even less likely that this storyline will ever be concluded.

A Westworld Movie Reboot Feels More Risky Than Season 5 Would Be

Despite the creators of the Westworld TV series, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, having a planned conclusion, Warner Bros. isn’t continuing the show with a fifth season. Instead, they’ve chosen to remake the original Westworld film from 1973.

David Koepp seems to be leading the charge on this new film, likely due to his history with the original creator, Michael Crichton. He famously turned Crichton’s novel Jurassic Park into a movie, making him a natural choice to reimagine Crichton’s most popular work as a director.

A well-known director is reportedly joining the project, and many fans believe it’s Steven Spielberg. He previously turned Kroepp’s Jurassic Park script into a blockbuster film, and they’ve collaborated on several other movies, like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as well as Spielberg’s next film about aliens, Disclosure Day.

No matter who directs the new film, reviving Westworld as a movie instead of continuing the TV series is a gamble. The film could end up competing directly with the HBO show, essentially becoming two different versions of the same story.

What Can A Westworld Movie Do That The TV Show Didn’t?

Okay, so this new Westworld movie… honestly, I’m struggling to see the point. The HBO series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy already took Michael Crichton’s original concept and absolutely ran with it. They delivered stunning visuals and really explored the ideas in a smart, thought-provoking way. It’s hard to imagine a movie reboot could offer anything fresh after that show’s impressive run.

Ten years after it first aired, the show’s production quality is already incredibly high, and it’s difficult to imagine anyone – even its original creator, David Kroepp – improving upon the storytelling of the early seasons of Westworld.

Honestly, if this movie tried to finish the story Westworld was building towards in its fifth season, staying true to what we already knew about the characters and the world, I think fans might actually accept it. But it’s looking like it’s just going to be another retelling of the same old story, which is a real disappointment.

Another Westworld Movie Would Be The Final Nail For HBO’s TV Show

A new Westworld movie effectively rules out a fifth season of the HBO series. Starting work on the movie will change the direction of the entire franchise, and might even make the TV show’s story no longer officially part of the Westworld universe.

HBO has started removing canceled shows from its Max streaming service, starting with Westworld. While some viewers may not mind seeing the show’s availability limited, many fans feel the later seasons of Westworld significantly damaged its quality, so this move doesn’t feel like a major loss.

As a huge fan of Westworld, I’m really worried about what’s happening. It’s one thing for HBO Max to pull the show, but a complete reboot movie feels like they’re trying to erase everything Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy built. If David Koepp’s movie actually happens without their input, it’ll essentially kill the original series for me – like it never existed. It’s a total disregard for the show’s legacy, as I see it.
