Throughout its seasons, though, some characters were played by different actors. This happened with Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane more than once – the role was recast two separate times.

While Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson ultimately became the most recognizable face of Gregor Clegane, two other actors played the role earlier in the series, each with their own reasons for leaving. This raises the question: why did the show go through three Mountains, and who portrayed the character most convincingly?

The series features many compelling and well-developed characters who change and evolve over time. Characters like The Mountain stand out because, unlike the others, he remains a simple and frightening figure without that same depth or development.

Gregor Clegane, often called ‘The Mountain,’ doesn’t say much – and even less after being experimented on by Qyburn. While he isn’t known for his intelligence, he’s incredibly strong. He may not be bright, but he’s good at spotting other people’s weaknesses, making him a dangerous fighter.

Though he holds the title of knight, Gregor Clegane is one of the most dishonorable men in Westeros. He blindly follows the Lannisters, carrying out their cruelest orders with brutal force. Driven by rage and acting on impulse since childhood, he’s less a man and more a monstrous creature motivated by pure instinct.

Joffrey Baratheon was a cruel and violent person from a young age. He maliciously burned his brother Sandor, and continued to commit terrible acts as he grew older. He was essentially a spoiled and dangerous child who reacted with force whenever he didn’t get what he wanted.

Gregor Clegane was widely feared across Westeros, and Bronn probably described him best. When Tyrion asked if Gregor truly frightened him, Bronn replied, “Anyone would be a fool not to be scared of him. He’s incredibly large and strong, and surprisingly fast for a man his size.”

Gregor Clegane Kept Being Recast on Game of Thrones for a Variety of Factors

Given the size and intimidating nature of the character The Mountain, finding the right actor was likely a challenge. They needed someone physically imposing who could also convey the character’s quiet, threatening presence.

Conan Stevens, an Australian actor and former wrestler, quickly became memorable despite appearing in only two episodes during the first season of the show. At seven feet one inch tall, his imposing physical presence made him a natural fit for the part of the menacing giant.

Unfortunately, his time on the show was brief. He had to leave due to a scheduling issue when he was cast as Bolg, the Orc warrior, in Season 2. Ian Whyte then took over the role, and remarkably, matched Stevens’ impressive height.

Although he played the character for a longer time than Stevens – lasting until the end of Season 3 – he ultimately decided to leave the role as well. Unlike Stevens, his departure wasn’t because of other work commitments; instead, he struggled to connect with the character.

DigitalSpy reported that Rory McCann, who played Sandor Clegane (The Hound), found it challenging to understand his character’s reasons for acting and felt emotionally affected by the violence he portrayed. Fortunately, McCann’s skills were showcased in other roles on the show, notably as characters requiring extensive makeup and prosthetics, including the Night King and the giant Wun Wun.

When actor Rory McCann left the show, the role of The Hound (Clegane) was recast with Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson for the fourth season. This time, the casting proved permanent. Björnsson’s performance is widely considered the best version of the character, and he continued to play The Hound for the rest of the series.

You know, when they cast Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, he was actually a bit shorter than the guys who played the role before him. While Stevens originally portrayed the role and helped establish it, Björnsson truly defined it and is remembered for his performance. Stevens set the stage, but Björnsson became the definitive version of the character.

Björnsson was surprised by how he was offered the part. He received a message on Facebook about it, and initially dismissed it as a joke. He didn’t even bother replying at first because he thought it couldn’t be real.

Björnsson Was Perfect For the Role and the Best Version of The Mountain

Because Björnsson played The Mountain for a longer period than any actor before him, he had more chances to develop the role. He was uniquely positioned to showcase the character’s biggest changes, particularly the disturbing transformation forced upon him by Qyburn.

Fans also got to see him in many fights, and he was responsible for some of the show’s most shocking and violent character deaths. He quickly became known as one of the most ruthless characters, and that reputation only grew when he returned from being killed.

He also had a memorable fight with The Hound, a highlight of Season 8. And viewers likely still remember his shocking kill in just his second appearance out of seventeen episodes.

Replacing an actor is always a difficult decision. Fortunately, in the case of The Mountain, the original actor’s performance was strong enough that most fans didn’t notice or mind the change.
