Devil May Cry Season 2 Ending Explained: Who The Jester REALLY Is

Even though it makes many changes to the original game, Netflix’s Devil May Cry is a thrilling animated series that captures the spirit of the popular video game franchise. It combines fast-paced action, a rich supernatural world, and an amazing soundtrack. Season 2 of Devil May Cry starts shortly after Lady’s shocking turn, and Dante is quickly jolted into action by the unexpected return of his brother, Vergil.

The new eight-episode season of the Netflix series sees Dante and Vergil begin to resolve their conflict, discovering that Mundus was actually behind their mother’s death. They also uncover a bigger threat in Argosax. In a dramatic season finale, the brothers turn the villains against each other, letting Mundus defeat his longtime enemy, Argosax. However, Dante and Vergil then clash over what to do next; Dante wants to retreat and prepare to fight Mundus on their own, while Vergil is focused on revenge.

Knowing Mundus was planning to invade the human world, but understanding his brother wouldn’t give up easily, Vergil knocks Dante unconscious and sends him through a portal, along with Sparda’s amulet. Dante wakes up injured in the ruins of a destroyed city, relieved that humanity is safe for now, but uncertain about the future. Meanwhile, Lady is speeding towards a new enemy who seems set to become a central figure in the third season of Devil May Cry.

The Jester’s Secret Identity In Devil May Cry Season 2 Explained

As a longtime fan of Devil May Cry, I remember season two really building up the Jester. They kept dropping hints that he was way more important than just a goofy court member. It seemed pretty obvious he was a spy for Darkcom, but the show kept you guessing there was more to it. And Lady’s backstory was another mystery! She’d said her parents were gone for years, but we only ever saw her mom die in flashbacks – her father’s fate was always a secret, which felt deliberate and intriguing.

It’s revealed that the Jester is actually Lady’s father. Though, his different colored eyes were a pretty big hint. Arkham, while researching how to defeat demons, transformed himself into one, tragically consumed his wife, and then vanished, leaving his daughter believing she was an orphan. Based on the ending of Devil May Cry, Arkham’s hatred of demons led him to work with Darkcom. He then proposed that Darkcom recruit his daughter, who had already become a powerful demon hunter.

Arkham used his demonic powers to infiltrate Darkcom as a spy. Considering his goal was to destroy all demons, it’s doubtful he realized Arius intended to revive another demon king, Argosax. Season 3 of Devil May Cry will likely reveal whether Arkham knew about this plan, as well as explain why he plotted to involve his own daughter in Darkcom’s activities.

Why Lady Doesn’t Wait For Dante In The Diner

The relationship between Dante and Lady in Devil May Cry has been a slow burn. After sharing a close kiss following a near-death experience, they seemed to be moving closer, but their progress was quickly stalled by the urgent need to stop Argosax from unleashing chaos. Dante clearly wants to commit to a relationship, and asks Lady to reconnect with him after the battle. However, she declines, explaining in a letter why a future together isn’t possible.

Lady is clearly stuck in a self-destructive pattern, according to what the experts on Married at First Sight might say. Still haunted by past experiences and recently discovering that Darkcom was responsible for her pain, she feels she doesn’t deserve love or happiness with Dante. As Dante points out to Vergil, seeking revenge only intensifies suffering. Lady hasn’t learned this lesson yet, and mistakenly believes that getting revenge on her father will bring her peace.

It’s strange how much Lady, despite loving Dante, resembles Vergil. Like Vergil, who is so focused on killing Mundus that he rejects the possibility of reconnecting with his brother, Lady believes that continuing her violent quest is the only way forward.

Dante & Lady Are Heading For The Same Destination In Devil May Cry Season 3

In the upcoming season of Devil May Cry, Dante and Lady will be pursuing their own separate leads, but it seems they’re ultimately heading towards the same place. Lady’s search for the Jester will likely take her to Makai, where he might still be connected to Mundus. Even if the Jester leaves Mundus’ service after Darkcom’s defeat, Makai would still be the most sensible place for him to go into hiding, considering his unpredictable transformations.

The end of Devil May Cry season 2 reveals Dante’s future: he’s headed to Makai to save Vergil from destroying himself. But first, Dante needs to become stronger, as he and Vergil both realize they aren’t powerful enough to defeat Mundus yet. Once Dante masters his Devil Trigger ability, a showdown with Vergil in Makai is almost guaranteed. Meanwhile, Lady will immediately face off against the Jester in the next area.

Vergil Vs. Mundus: Who Wins?

The second season of Devil May Cry concludes with a fierce battle between Vergil and Mundus, but it doesn’t reveal a winner. Both are vying for control of Makai and planning an invasion of Earth, and the story strongly suggests Mundus will be victorious. Dante and Vergil only use Argosax against Mundus because they realize they can’t defeat him on their own, and he readily accepts the challenge. Considering Vergil couldn’t even defeat Argosax with Dante’s help, while Mundus could, it seems highly unlikely Vergil has much of a chance against Mundus – about the same chance as Sparda winning a ‘father of the year’ award.

It’s likely that the third season of Devil May Cry will open with Mundus still ruling Makai, and Vergil imprisoned, where he’s expected to regain his allegiance.

People would likely prefer Vergil to rule the demons, as he’s a kinder leader than the cruel Mundus. However, humans naturally don’t want to be invaded. This highlights a core issue that the Devil May Cry series hasn’t fully addressed: the demon world is a harsh place where many innocent demon families are struggling. Whether it’s Dante, Vergil, or someone else, the series needs a character to negotiate a lasting peace between humans and demons, avoiding another devastating war.
