James Cameron’s latest film has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record previously held by his own classic science fiction movies.
James Cameron is a hugely successful science fiction director known for blockbuster hits. Since the mid-1980s, his films have generally received very positive reviews. While movies like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, Titanic, and Avatar are considered some of the most important films in their genres, a recent concert film has now overtaken them in a key ranking on Rotten Tomatoes.
Billie Eilish’s concert film, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), has received an outstanding 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the highest rating ever for a film directed by Cameron. The score is based on over 500 reviews from verified viewers since its release on May 8th, and could change as more people share their opinions.
Excluding the 2023 re-release of Titanic, which is highly rated at 97%, James Cameron’s next most popular film, according to Rotten Tomatoes audience scores, is Terminator 2: Judgment Day with 95%. Other films with high audience scores include Aliens (94%), Avatar: The Way of Water (92%), and Avatar: Fire and Ash (90%).
Billie Eilish’s concert film, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), which she also co-directed, has received very positive reviews. Currently, it has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 60 critic reviews. This ties it with James Cameron’s 1986 film Aliens as his highest-rated movie. Cameron’s next best-rated films are the original Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, both of which have a 90% critic score.

Billie Eilish’s concert film, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), proved to be a box office success, also marking another win for director James Cameron. The film earned over $20.1 million during its opening weekend, with a production budget of around $20 million. It debuted alongside other films like The Devil Wears Prada 2, Michael, Mortal Kombat 2, and The Sheep Detectives.
Billie Eilish’s concert film is a unique project for James Cameron, as it’s the first movie he’s directed in 17 years that isn’t part of the Avatar franchise. His last film outside of Avatar was the 2005 documentary Aliens of the Deep. This comes shortly after the release of his latest Avatar sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and Cameron still intends to direct the fourth and fifth Avatar films in the coming years.
James Cameron is working on a new Terminator movie and has also secured the rights to adapt the fantasy novel The Devils. Although Avatar 4 is currently the frontrunner for his next directing project, after releasing the 3D concert film of Billie Eilish’s tour, Cameron is known for occasionally surprising audiences with unexpected projects, just as he did with that concert film. It’s still unknown which film he’ll tackle next.
