Jessica Jones has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, potentially setting up a future solo series for the character. Marvel Studios is actively expanding the street-level, gritty side of the MCU, similar to the style of the now-canceled Netflix shows like The Defenders.
As a critic, I’m watching Daredevil: Born Again carry a lot of weight for Marvel’s plan to reconnect with its Netflix roots. Initially, it seemed like just Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin were coming back, but now it’s become clear they’re bringing in a whole host of familiar faces – heroes, villains, and supporting characters – from that earlier run of Marvel shows. It’s a much bigger reunion than we first thought, and it’s exciting to see those actors getting another chance in the MCU.
Krysten Ritter reprised her role as Jessica Jones in the final three episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, marking her first appearance since her own show ended in 2019. In the series, Jessica initially aided Matt Murdock and Karen Page behind the scenes, implying they’d maintained a connection over time, and later directly helped Daredevil defeat Mayor Fisk.
Jessica Jones recently returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some surprising twists, including the introduction of her daughter, Danielle. The finale of Daredevil: Born Again confirmed a storyline from the comics: Luke Cage, played again by Mike Colter, is Danielle’s father. These developments, and others hinted at, would be a great foundation for a new Jessica Jones show.
Jessica Jones’ MCU Return Sets Up A Whole Lot Of Story For A New Solo Series
Recent photos from the set of Daredevil: Born Again season 3 confirm that Jessica Jones and Luke Cage will reappear in 2027, alongside Finn Jones, who plays Iron Fist. While Daredevil: Born Again is set to feature them, these characters aren’t limited to that show. The season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again also showed Jessica Jones returning to Alias Investigations, the detective agency where she worked for three seasons, suggesting further storylines for the character.
It would be compelling to see a Jessica Jones series focused on her trying to rebuild her detective agency. Adding Luke Cage into the mix could create a really intricate story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jessica strongly disapproved of Luke’s decision to take on questionable work abroad with Mr. Charles, and even though they reconciled in the finale – with Bullseye posing as Luke – there’s bound to be significant conflict between them if they appear together again.
The Netflix series established Jessica Jones as independent and self-reliant. A new show could explore a different side of her – as a mother to Danielle, protecting her while also rebuilding her relationship with Luke Cage. It would also be compelling to address the changes to Jessica’s powers since Danielle’s birth, explaining the cause and how she might regain control. This would create a strong foundation for a Jessica Jones series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why Jessica Jones Is Marvel’s Perfect Defender For Another Solo Disney+ Series After Daredevil
The core heroes from the Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, either having already appeared or with plans to do so. With Charlie Cox’s Daredevil getting his own Born Again series, it makes sense for Jessica Jones to get a solo show next. Jon Bernthal is already reprising his role as the Punisher in a separate Marvel presentation, so another solo series for Frank Castle seems less likely.
Bringing Luke Cage and Iron Fist back into the MCU could finally give fans the ‘Heroes for Hire’ team-up series they’ve wanted for years. Luke’s recent work abroad already positions him as a hero for hire. Plus, Jessica Jones was the second-best show of the ‘Defenders’ series after ‘Daredevil,’ making her a strong candidate to lead her own series following her appearance in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
