What to know:
- Ripple Prime, the digital alchemists, have conjured a $200 million funding facility from Neuberger Berman-a mere trifle, really, to expand margin financing for trading in both the ancient (traditional assets) and the new-age (digital assets) markets.
- Ripple, ever the showman, claims this windfall will satisfy the insatiable appetite of clients for its multi-asset prime brokerage platform, whose revenue has tripled since it swallowed and rebranded Hidden Road in 2025. One might call it a phoenix, if phoenixes were profitable.
- The deal, as expected, underscores the feverish institutional interest in crypto, where giants like State Street and Standard Chartered now juggle digital assets like so many proverbial balls. All while Ripple, with its $500 million fundraise at a $40 billion valuation, continues to expand like a balloon at a party it didn’t invite itself to.
Ripple’s prime-brokerage unit, in a press release dripping with faux modesty, announced it had “closed a $200 million funding agreement” with Neuberger Berman to expand margin offerings for investors. One wonders if the margin is for trading or for the existential dread of participating in crypto markets.
Ripple also claimed the funds will “support the ongoing growth” of Ripple Prime, citing “increasing client demand” for services that, one suspects, are less about compliance and more about the thrill of turning money into smoke and back again.
Since acquiring Hidden Road for $1.25 billion (a price that makes even the most jaded capitalist blush) and rebranding it as Ripple Prime, the platform’s revenue has tripled. Neuberger Berman, with its $570 billion AUM, is clearly not here to play.
Ripple’s acquisition spree-Hidden Road, then GTreasury for $1 billion-reads like a child buying all the candy in the store, only to discover the candy was made of lead. But hey, at least it’s shiny!
“Dependable access to financing and balance sheet strength are critical to institutional participants,” said Noel Kimmel, President of Ripple Prime. A statement so profound it could be carved into the walls of a bunker. “This facility enables us to grow alongside our clients by delivering increased margin capacity, greater responsiveness, and improved capital efficiency.” Translation: We’ll take your money and cry later.
Kimmel also praised Neuberger’s “deep expertise in asset-based finance”-a phrase that sounds like a compliment until you realize it’s code for “we’re all in over our heads.”
“Ripple Prime has built an innovative brokerage platform combining fintech-grade technology and agility with bank-level compliance,” said Peter Sterling of Neuberger. If by “compliance” he means “pretending to follow rules,” then bravo. A true masterclass in financial theater.
Institutional investors, meanwhile, are diving into crypto with the enthusiasm of a man leaping into a pool of sharks, all thanks to the U.S. President’s administration’s “crypto-friendly” policies. A policy, one might argue, that resembles a toddler’s attempt to organize a bank vault.
State Street Corp., ever the trendsetter, launched a digital-asset platform this year. Standard Chartered, in a move that defies logic, plans to set up a prime brokerage for crypto. Perhaps next, they’ll start trading in emojis.
Ripple, in its latest fundraising frenzy, secured $500 million at a $40 billion valuation. Backed by Citadel Securities and Fortress Investment Group, the company now has enough capital to fund its expansion into custody, stablecoins, and prime-brokerage services-services that may or may not exist in the same universe as reality.
