Thomas Rainwater Takes Over John Dutton’s Role in Yellowstone Spinoffs

The new series following Yellowstone focuses on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and features returning characters like Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), Mo Brings Plenty, and Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill). While familiar faces remain, Kevin Costner’s John Dutton is no longer the main character; the show has moved past his storyline.

John Dutton’s death in the second part of Yellowstone Season 5 happened after Kevin Costner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, decided to go their separate ways, bringing his time on the show to an end. Although John’s story is finished, the Yellowstone world is still growing with several new shows. One of the most exciting upcoming series is Dutton Ranch, which will focus on the stories of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Meanwhile, Kayce took on the responsibility of continuing the Dutton family’s legacy in an episode of Marshals Season 1 in March, stepping into the role previously held by John.

Throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone, John Dutton created a lasting impact. Before his character’s death in Season 5, Kevin Costner played a man respected across Montana for owning the massive Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, a property his family had held for over a hundred years. The show’s first prequel, 1883, tells the story of how John’s ancestors originally founded the ranch.

The main storyline of Yellowstone focuses on John Dutton’s determination to preserve his family’s ranch, revealing him as a fiercely protective character. This trait is also evident in the prequel series, 1923, which shows the family’s long history of fighting for their land. Right from the start of Yellowstone, John makes it clear he’ll do whatever it takes to hold onto the ranch, establishing the show’s central conflict.

The first episode of Yellowstone shows John Dutton using explosives to change a river’s course, blocking a developer, Dan Jenkins, from reaching the land he wants to build on. This sets the stage for the morally ambiguous choices Dutton makes throughout the series to protect his ranch and family, ultimately leading to numerous conflicts and deaths.

As a long-time fan of the show, I was really surprised by Kayce Dutton’s decision. Knowing his family’s history – all the violence and sacrifice to hold onto Yellowstone – he took a completely different path. He actually sold the ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation, giving the land back to the people whose ancestors originally lived there. It felt like a huge turning point. But even though Kayce walked away from that life, it turns out the Yellowstone is still facing major threats, proving some battles just won’t stay buried.

Marshals Episode 3 Replaced John Dutton With Thomas Rainwater

Thomas Rainwater is taking strong action to safeguard the expanded Broken Rock Reservation, which now encompasses the Dutton Ranch. Historically, both Rainwater and his people have worked to protect Paradise Valley. With John Dutton no longer involved, Rainwater has stepped up to fill the role of protecting this valuable land bordering Yellowstone National Park.

An explosion on the “Road to Nowhere” blocks traffic, and Kayce identifies Chairman Thomas Rainwater as the one responsible. Rainwater’s action – blocking non-reservation traffic – is a calculated move to reroute vehicles onto tribal land, demonstrating he’s willing to be just as forceful as John Dutton.

Although Kayce has stepped down as the main protector of Yellowstone, the story is now focusing on Thomas Rainwater. He’s taking on the responsibility of safeguarding what used to be the Dutton Ranch. Despite starting as opponents, both Thomas and John Dutton always wanted the same thing: to protect Paradise Valley, making this transition a logical one.

From the very beginning of the show, Thomas has consistently fought to preserve Montana’s natural beauty, honoring the way his family remembered it. Now that Costner’s character is gone, Rainwater has fully stepped into the role of protector, actively working to stop a new mine that threatens to harm the reservation in the episode “Road to Nowhere.” This conflict strongly reflects John’s deepest beliefs and principles.
