So, I just heard that Levy’s producing another movie! The guy is on fire right now – he just finished up working on Star Wars: Starfighter, and Deadpool & Wolverine absolutely crushed it at the box office, making over a billion bucks! It’s awesome to see him keep knocking it out of the park.
Shawn Levy, known for directing big-budget films, is returning to science fiction. Just after finishing his upcoming Star Wars movie, he’s agreed to direct Somewhere Out There, a new sci-fi drama for Netflix. Variety reports that Netflix won a competitive bid for the script, written by Max Taxe, continuing their successful working relationship with the popular director.
Described as a heartfelt and realistic science fiction film, Somewhere Out There feels similar in tone to movies like Arrival and director Shawn Levy‘s The Adam Project. The story centers on a father struggling with grief after his wife’s death, who sends a message into space hoping for a connection. Surprisingly, he receives a response, launching an intensely personal and sweeping interstellar mystery.
This project brings together 21 Laps Entertainment, run by Levy, and screenwriter Max Taxe, who previously worked with Levy on a screenplay called Ripple and the 2022 film Moonshot. Levy and Dan Levine will produce the movie under the 21 Laps label. Netflix hopes this acquisition will continue their track record of successful, thought-provoking science fiction, similar to hits like Stranger Things and All the Light We Cannot See.
Shawn Levy is at the height of his career right now. He recently had huge success with Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned over $1.086 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. He’s also finished directing Star Wars: Starfighter, a Ryan Gosling movie set to release in theaters in May 2027. But even with these big blockbuster projects, Somewhere Out There shows that Levy still cares about creating original stories for streaming audiences.
Combining deeply personal stories of loss with the vastness of space, Somewhere Out There has all the makings of a huge hit on streaming platforms. With Levy skillfully juggling big franchise projects and fresh, inventive ideas, viewers are in for an exciting and moving experience when this sci-fi drama arrives on Netflix.
