The Dexter series is back! The original show ran from 2006 to 2013, and after an eight-year break, it returned with Dexter: New Blood. Although that season ended with Dexter’s death, it seemed like the story—and Michael C. Hall’s involvement—was over for good.
Following the original series, Dexter: Original Sin was created as a way to continue the story. Around the same time, Showtime and Paramount were also exploring other potential Dexter spin-offs, including a show focused on the Trinity Killer and his backstory as Dexter’s most memorable enemy.
Following the success of Dexter: New Blood, came Dexter: Resurrection. As the title suggests, Michael C. Hall returns as Dexter Morgan, but this time in a longer-form sequel. While other potential spin-offs, like Original Sin, didn’t move forward, the first season of Resurrection attracted a large audience, and a second season is currently being filmed.
Season two will feature stories about Brian Cox’s character, based on the New York Ripper, and Dan Stevens’ character, known as the Five Boroughs Killer. Desmond Harrington will return as Joey Quinn in a regular role, and he won’t be the only familiar face from the original Dexter series to appear.
Jamie Batista
Jamie Batista joined Dexter in season six as Harrison’s nanny. She was more than just someone in Dexter’s life; she played a key role in the story. By caring for Harrison, she allowed Dexter to continue his double life as a serial killer, letting him focus on that side of himself while still giving viewers the content they expected.
Jamie could be a great addition to season two of Resurrection due to her connection to Angel Batista, who appeared in the first season. Angel traveled to New York to expose Dexter’s identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher, but was ultimately killed by Leon Prater. Jamie might return to Dexter’s orbit as she investigates her cousin’s death, potentially leading to another intense showdown. Fans have long hoped to see Jamie return to the Dexter universe, and this could be the ideal moment.
Brian Moser
I was so excited to see Brian Moser back in the Resurrection finale! It’s only the second time we’ve seen him since the very first season of the original Dexter. It’s cool how he represents Dexter’s darker impulses – kind of like the devil on his shoulder – while Harry is always there as his conscience, giving him guidance. It really creates a great internal struggle for Dexter, and I love seeing that balance.
Fans love Moser, so bringing him back for season two of Resurrection would be a real treat. It also fits the storyline, since he was hinted at in the season one finale. This opens the door for him to continue as a part of Dexter’s internal world. The show could even use flashbacks – something Dexter has often done to share important details with viewers – to show Moser in the past.
Vince Masuka
Vince Masuka made a quick appearance in the first season of Resurrection, joining Angel Batista and Joey Quinn to celebrate Batista’s retirement—a heartwarming scene for all three. Masuka, along with Quinn, is one of the few remaining characters from the original Dexter series. Given Quinn’s larger role this season, Masuka might be headed to New York City next.
Masuka often provided comic relief in Dexter, but he and Dexter also shared a surprisingly close bond – at least, as close as Dexter allowed. Like many characters, Masuka never learned Dexter’s secret, which leaves the possibility open for this to be revealed in the Dexter: New Blood season two.
A surprisingly well-received part of the original Dexter finale was how the other characters finally learned the truth about him. While Lieutenant LaGuerta figured out Dexter was a serial killer, she tragically died shortly after, mirroring the fate of James Doakes from season two.
Quinn and Masuka, along with Batista, are still investigating Dexter and uncovering his secrets. Batista has already faced Dexter, and Quinn will likely have a similar confrontation soon. Masuka, a long-standing character, could easily join Quinn in that pivotal moment.
Astor & Cody
One of the biggest disappointments in seasons two of both New Blood and Resurrection has been the lack of Astor and Cody. These are the sons of Dexter’s late wife, Rita, who was killed by the Trinity Killer. Dexter formed a strong bond with the boys, becoming a father figure to them after meeting them when they were little.
Following Rita’s death, Astor and Cody were featured less and less on the show. They moved to Orlando to live with Rita’s parents and only appeared in a few episodes during seasons five and six. They had a final appearance in one episode of season seven. Many fans consider the way their characters were handled – essentially disappearing – to be a major flaw in the original Dexter series.
The second season of Resurrection can address some previous issues. Astor and Cody are Harrison’s siblings, and his storyline in both New Blood and Resurrection has focused on his feelings of family estrangement. They would naturally fit into the ongoing story, particularly as Harrison develops a stronger bond with Dexter.
Dexter still has unresolved issues with Astor and Cody. Similar to Joey Quinn and Vince Masuka, his stepchildren were never aware of his true nature, and they don’t know he probably played a role in their mother’s death. This significant plot point offers a lot of potential for the new season’s storyline.
