The show is a visually stunning and well-made production, boasts a fantastic cast, and offers a huge amount of content to enjoy.
This game is considered one of the best RPGs of all time and perfectly showcases the appeal of turn-based combat. While Baldur’s Gate 3 is fantastic, some other RPGs are even better. Though few reach that level, fans of Baldur’s Gate 3 shouldn’t overlook these other excellent turn-based games.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Has Recently Taken the RPG Crown From Baldur’s Gate
Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved a historic win, becoming the first game to win Game of the Year at all five major award shows. Following its success, Expedition 33 also earned the same honor, and rightfully so. Developed by a small studio in France, Expedition 33 is a tragic story about a group of explorers desperately trying to survive and prevent a powerful, godlike entity from wiping them out in a dark fantasy world overrun with terrifying creatures.
What starts as a straightforward story quickly becomes one of the most heartbreaking experiences you can have in a video game today.
Beyond the compelling story, the game itself is fantastic. The world is gorgeous and packed with enemies to fight and hidden games to discover. Battles are turn-based and really exciting, but they’re also tough – it takes time and practice to become skilled at dodging and blocking attacks.
Players can customize their team and play however they like thanks to unlockable weapons and upgrades, and they can also unleash devastating finishing moves. Even after a year since its release, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is still incredibly popular, and its success is truly remarkable.
Final Fantasy 7 is the JRPG to End All Others
Games like Final Fantasy VII really established many of the conventions we see in RPGs today, including titles like Baldur’s Gate and Expedition 33. Final Fantasy VII is often the first game people think of when the series is mentioned, thanks to its iconic characters and settings. Cloud Strife’s quest to defeat the Shinra Corporation has become legendary and has been re-released in various forms numerous times.
People initially play this game to experience the story of Cloud and his companions, but they keep coming back for its classic turn-based battles and incredibly rich backstory. Plus, it features Sephiroth, a famously difficult and memorable boss. The way Cloud and Sephiroth’s story develops is brilliantly crafted, creating one of the most legendary rivalries in video game history.
Final Fantasy VII isn’t just a fantastic entry in the Final Fantasy series—it’s widely considered one of the best video games of all time. It’s therefore not surprising that it’s being completely reimagined as a series of three new games.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a Transcendent Tactical Simulator
I’ve always been a huge fan of the Fire Emblem series, even if it doesn’t get quite the same attention as Final Fantasy. It’s a really amazing tactical RPG series, and Three Houses is a standout title for me. You play as Byleth, and the best part is getting to know and train a group of students, helping them grow into powerful warriors while uncovering their personal stories. It’s just a fantastic experience!
The core gameplay of the Fire Emblem series—its tactical battles—is still excellent. However, what truly sets Three Houses apart is its story. You play as Byleth and choose one of three students to mentor. This decision impacts not only the way you approach each battle, but also dramatically alters the game’s ending.
I’ve been replaying Three Houses and it’s amazing how much you can miss on your first run – each path feels totally fresh. If you’re like me and absolutely loved Baldur’s Gate 3 – the mix of strategy and really getting invested in the characters – then Fire Emblem: Three Houses is definitely something you’ll enjoy.
Persona 5 Royal Gives RPG Fans the Royal Treatment
Traditional turn-based RPGs often take place in expansive fantasy worlds, where characters battle increasingly strong magical creatures. The Persona series is different – it sets its story in modern-day Japan, blending fantastical elements with a more realistic setting and characters. The newest installment, Persona 5 Royal, centers around a group of high school students who can summon powerful beings called Personas to fight against corrupt adults and try to improve their city, Tokyo.
Persona 5 Royal is a truly exceptional game. Its combat system is deep and satisfying, and collecting a wide variety of Personas makes it even better. Each dungeon is uniquely designed and culminates in thrilling boss fights. The characters – both those you fight with and the supporting cast – are incredibly well-developed and relatable, making them one of the best groups in gaming. Plus, there’s a huge amount of extra content and activities to keep you engaged.
It’s hard to grasp just how expansive this game is until you play it yourself. While excellent turn-based RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 appear from time to time, none quite match the special feeling of Persona 5 Royal, which remains the gold standard.
