As a longtime fan, I’ve always been struck by how incredibly powerful Sauron is. He nearly conquered all of Middle-earth in the original Lord of the Rings story, building up a huge, terrifying army to take over everything. Honestly, if Frodo, Sam, and the Fellowship hadn’t worked together the way they did, I really think Sauron would have won against the combined forces of Men, Elves, and Dwarves. He was that close to succeeding.
What makes J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world so captivating is its incredible variety of creatures, and Sauron is just one example. Surprisingly, some of these characters are actually more powerful than the famous villain from The Lord of the Rings. Although they didn’t all make it into Peter Jackson’s movies, Tolkien experts know these beings would be a serious challenge to Sauron.
Ungoliant Birthed Middle-Earth’s Most Terrifying Evils
Some of the most formidable characters in The Lord of the Rings are actually evil and frightening. Ungoliant is among the most terrifying – an ancient being who existed even before the world began. It’s not entirely clear what Ungoliant was, but J.R.R. Tolkien hinted she might have been one of the Maiar, powerful immortal spirits created to assist the Valar.
Ungoliant, no matter where she came from, is the source of some of the most terrible evils in Middle-earth. She teamed up with the fallen angel Melkor to extinguish the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. Driven by an endless, destructive hunger, she devoured everything in her path, possessing the power to take anything she desired.
She is descended from Ungoliant, a monstrous being who birthed many creatures. Ungoliant was far more powerful than even Sauron, exceeding the strength of any villain featured in Tolkien’s primary stories.
Manwë and the Valar Could Take on Sauron With Ease
The Valar are powerful, ancient spirits created by Eru Ilúvatar when the world began. Similar to angels or gods from myths, they were given control over the physical world. Manwë, acting with Ilúvatar’s authority, led the Valar and guided their efforts in creating and shaping everything around us.
I’ve always been in awe of Manwë and his people, especially how they stood against the terrible Melkor during the First Age. As the one who commanded the air and skies, Manwë played a huge part in finally capturing Melkor, which thankfully allowed Middle-earth to heal and flourish after so much fighting.
Sauron was one of the Maiar, powerful spiritual beings who served the greater Valar, essentially acting as their assistants. While incredibly dangerous himself, Sauron was far less powerful than Manwë, the leader of the Valar, or any of the Valar in general.
Morgoth Taught Sauron His Evil Ways
While Sauron is the main villain in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he isn’t the most powerful evil Middle-earth has ever seen. Sauron used to serve an even darker being during the First Age. This being, known as Morgoth (or Melkor), was a powerful angelic being who turned against his creator and sought to corrupt the entire world.
I’m absolutely fascinated by Morgoth, the original Dark Lord! He’s the one who truly corrupted Middle-earth, creating terrible creatures like Orcs and Balrogs. He fought a massive war against the Elves and the Valar way back in the First Age, but thankfully, he was finally beaten and imprisoned forever. It’s mind-blowing to think that even Sauron was just his lieutenant during that huge conflict, the War of Wrath – Morgoth was that powerful!
Although Morgoth was defeated in the First Age by the Valar, legends say he will one day return to try and conquer Middle-earth. This will be the last, decisive battle between good and evil, and it’s foretold that Morgoth will ultimately be defeated. Until that time, he remains imprisoned, unable to threaten the people of Middle-earth.
Tom Bombadil Is Immune to Great Magic
Tom Bombadil is arguably the most enigmatic character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world. This cheerful wanderer appears at different points in the history of Middle-earth. He initially helps Frodo Baggins and the other Hobbits at the beginning of their journey, a scene that wasn’t included in Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring movie. Bombadil finally made his on-screen debut in the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, portrayed by Rory Kinnear.
Tom Bombadil looks like an ordinary man, but he’s actually ancient and incredibly powerful – far more than he lets on. Stories say he existed long before the stars themselves, and he’s seen Middle-earth change over countless ages, from its very beginning to the time of the War of the Ring and even after.
Tom Bombadil is a remarkably old and powerful character in Tolkien’s world. As shown in The Fellowship of the Ring, Sauron’s powerful Ring has no effect on him. Gandalf points out that Bombadil would probably just forget about the Ring rather than try to use it. Even now, it’s still a mystery what exactly Tom Bombadil is, with some suggesting he might be a manifestation of the land itself.
Eru Ilúvatar Created the Lord of the Rings World Itself
Eru Ilúvatar is the supreme being, the creator of everything. He brought the world, Arda – which includes Middle-earth – into existence through his own power, essentially singing it into being. He also created the powerful spirits known as the Valar and Maiar, as well as Elves and Men, each with a specific role to play in the universe.
Ilúvatar is, in many ways, J.R.R. Tolkien’s version of a Creator God. The Lord of the Rings draws inspiration from various religions and myths, particularly Christianity, and Tolkien created Ilúvatar based on the idea of all-powerful gods found in those beliefs.
As a huge fan of Tolkien’s world, I’ve always been fascinated by Ilúvatar. Honestly, we don’t know much about him directly, just what he made. But it’s pretty clear he’s the most powerful being in all of Middle-earth. Seriously, not even Sauron or the original Dark Lord, Morgoth, would stand a chance against him. Ultimately, Ilúvatar is the one who truly rules over Arda, the entire world.
