Summary

  • GKIDS will screen a new 4K remaster of Tekkonkinkreet in North America for its 20th anniversary
  • The 2006 Studio 4°C film blends hand‑drawn and CG animation, praised for emotional depth
  • Screenings are set for the end of May and Early June

GKIDS will be showing a newly remastered version of the anime film Tekkonkinkreet in 4K in theaters across North America to mark its 20th anniversary.

First released in 2006 and directed by Michael Arias, this film is adapted from Taiyō Matsumoto’s manga and is well-known for its beautiful visuals and moving story. This new remaster enhances the film’s unique animation style – a blend of hand-drawn art and computer graphics – originally created by Studio 4°C, the team behind other popular works like BESERK: The Golden Age Arc and PHOENIX: Reminiscence of Flower.

These screenings showcase why Tekkonkinkreet remains a hugely influential anime film. It tells the story of Black and White, two orphaned brothers trying to survive in the bustling, dangerous city of Treasure Town. Even twenty years after its release, the film’s powerful themes of friendship, staying alive, and the loss of innocence still connect with viewers. This remastered version hopes to share these ideas with both dedicated fans and a new generation.

Okay, so when this movie hits theaters here in North America, we’ll get to choose between watching it with the original Japanese voices and English subtitles, or with the English dub – and I’m excited because Scott Menville and Casey Mongillo are doing the voices! Honestly, this film is a total classic. It’s already become a bit of a cult favorite, and it even won a major award in Japan back in 2008. Plus, I’ve heard it’s really inspired a lot of animators, both here and in Japan, which is awesome.
