This special edition commemorated two significant anniversaries in 2026: Porsche Motorsport’s 75th year and the 50th anniversary of Apple’s establishment.
Over the weekend, Porsche and Apple celebrated a successful year by commemorating a legendary design. At the IMSA SportsCar Championship race at Laguna Seca on May 3rd, Porsche’s factory racing cars featured a special paint scheme – a tribute to the iconic rainbow design originally used on the first Apple computers. The Porsche Penske Motorsport team raced with this classic look, honoring a beloved piece of racing history.
The car’s unique look wasn’t just a throwback; it was a special tribute. It marked both the 75th anniversary of Porsche’s racing division and the 50th anniversary of Apple. The design is inspired by a Porsche 935 K3 raced by the Dick Barbour team in 1980, which featured Apple branding and competed in famous races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This connection to a history of innovation was beautifully brought back to life on the modern Porsche 963.
Both Porsche and Apple deliberately chose Laguna Seca Raceway for this special event. The famous racetrack is in Northern California, not far from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino. Laguna Seca also holds a special place in Porsche’s history in North America, as it’s the regular host of the large Porsche Rennsport Reunion.
Porsche Penske Motorsport entered the race with two Porsche 963 cars, as they were already leading the championship. Kévin Estre of France and Laurens Vanthoor of Belgium drove the No. 6 car, and Frenchman Julien Andlauer teamed up with Brazilian Felipe Nasr in the No. 7 car.
Porsche and Apple recently showcased a brilliant blend of history and innovation with their new 963 hybrid race car. The car’s design deliberately evokes the iconic look of 1980s racing, proving that a nod to the past can be incredibly exciting when combined with cutting-edge technology. Seeing the 963 compete this weekend was a thrilling tribute to both brands’ long-standing leadership in their fields.
